i've done some HD video for documenting some progress at work and I'm blown away how well HD video quality is on my Samsung s3.

For stills my point and shoot is my Olympus OMD micro 4/3. Using this small camera I can control my shutter speed so I dont get those blurry shots commonly seen on smartphone photos. My 3 and 6 year old use my panasonic Lx5 as a toy camera LOL!! And the 6yr old also used my OM-D and amazingly she gets stunning composition in many cases :)

Sorry to be late on this, but I wanted to respond. For many years I had a Pentax SLR that I used almost never and relied on a point and shot because I felt it was a better match for what I was doing.

Here is a sequence of pictures that my climbing partner took in 2007 with my Canon SA 600 pocketable camera. At the particular time it was my turn to lead so my partner got the camera and I got the rack.

We had enough climbing gear with us that we would never have considered bringing a slr or dslr. We wanted something that would fit in a top pocket and be handled with one hand while belaying with the other.

This kind of shows the climbing junk that we had with us that day. I had just finished belaying my partner up to the top.

When I listed my equipment, my Canon S100 is listed first. It would certainly take better quality pictures than these. Just as a little test I printed an 8 by 10 of one of the pictures that I listed here. It looks good to me.

Once I "learned how to shoot" I ditched DSLR entirely. My style is conservative and I shoot for hobby and "art", so things like contrast, resolution are not a priority compared to being able to have the camera on me.

Cell phone cameras work just fine in sunlight especially if you have a photo app which allows you to control exposure.

Beyond that - I have two older sigma DP - wide and normal.

Currently, it seems sony has the lead in terms of sensors and mirrorless cameras. NEX7 or so. Or any of the 4/3 systems, but their quality is normal whereas sony seems to be a step ahead. Haven't used any of them.
