I am looking for insurance and I am contemplating just getting liability to start with. My reasoning is that my equipment is not expensive enough to where I cannot 'self insure'. I'd hate to have my liability policy dropped for an equipment claim, and any claim would be small enough that it wouldn't really make sense. Additionally, photography isn't my full time money earner, and my full time job allows me to replace equipment as needed. Thoughts?

If you are using the camera equipment to make money, you can't cover it under your home owner's policy and need a commercial insurance policy. If you can afford to simply replace the gear, then there's no need for equipment insurance. However, liability coverage is important because you never know what might happen on a photography job.

You could always join PPA and opt in for their coverage. There is a small deductible but no yearly payment aside from the PPA dues.

a. Your liability coverage will need to be a commercial liability policy.
b. Most companies have a minimum commercial policy fee, like $300 annually.
c. The cost of the commercial liability coverage alone will be substantially less than their minimum policy fee, but you'd still be charged the minimum
d. The minimum policy fee is usually enough to include both liability and a good amount of equipment coverage.

Thanks. This is the info I was looking for. I realize it needs to be commercial and that is what I am shopping. I just wasn't sure if I was off track about the equipment coverage portion. I will wait and compare the quotes and see what works best.

Thanks to you all for your thoughts.
