Ciaou,

I'm lusting over a new camera..... (aren't we all.)

I was thinking a DSLR, but REALLLLY don't want to drag it, and multiple lenses around, as I am lucky enough to be travelling extensively. I still suffer from Hasselblad-Neck Syndrome.:D

It dawned on me that an SX50, which I have seen and handled, PLUS a 300HS, which I already own, would be a great option, in lieu of a DSLR.

My thinking is the SX50 for it's awesome zoom, and the shirt-pocketable 300HS for it's low light capability.

Overall costs would also be significantly less than a DSLR and lenses.

Any thoughts?

Cheers from sunny Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico.

del Sol

It depends what your goals are. You won't approach the ability of a DSLR to shoot in low light, nor the fast AF, nor the shutter lag or the ability to use fast lenses or control DOF. You will get the all the zoom range you can dream of, better portability and reasonably decent quality in good light.

You might be a good candidate for a micro 4/3 or Nikon 1 setup if you are looking to balance performance and portability.

Thanks, tkbslc,

I have never owned a digital SLR, so this advice is greatly appreciated.

I reallllly would like faster af times, low light capability, and (especially) less shutter lag.

As with most things in life, it appears to be a matter of priorities, and trade-offs.

Will check out the Nikon1, and the micro 4/3 marketplace.

Cheers, del Sol

del Sol: i am not a pro by any sense of the word, I am a beginner with some experience. My photo taking is pretty much limited to vacations, backyards, and local zoo. That said, I've gone the DSLR route, probably bought and sold a dozen lenses in search of the combo that fit my needs. Aside from the weight of lugging it all around.

What I settled on and am extremely happy with is the SX40 and 300HS. The 300 goes with me most everywhere and is my go to camera for that quick shot.

Neither of these will ever produce the quality of a good prime, but if you're a hobbyist like me, I found this combo to be perfect for my photo needs.

Just my two pennies worth!

Henry's was blowing the Nikon 1 V1 out the door, for bargain prices relatively...so was B&H. Bought one.
Have an Oly OMD too. Complex camera to learn.
Had a NEX5. Lenses? Large might as well use my N D300S. Menus? If I left the camera in auto, image quality was good. Sony Logic defies me...so I didn't get a NEX7. Thought I might as well carry my dslr.

Lots of choices. :)

I have an SX40 and a G1X and they meet my needs
the SX40 for shooting birds and wildlife, a DSLR owner
would have to have a 400 mm or more lens to top it,
and by most account, the G1X IQ tops or exceeds most entry-level DSLRs

Depends what you like to shoot.
The best camera is the one you have with you.

Canon makes a wonderful travel zoom. 260 HS.
Want a little bit larger sensor? S110 or G15

Need a long, long zoom? SX50HS if I remember...

Low light or fast moving? dslr.

Hope this helps
