Using manual flash for back lighting is fine as long as you know what you are getting into. Honestly for studio work, you want to be in manual for all your flashes as your shot to shot consistency is much higher in Manual mode.

I set my Off Camera Flashes to ETTL and then control them from the camera menu as Manual mode (in two groups, the 7D has 3 groups I think).

This way I can have the control of the Manual mode in studio shots, while not having to scramble around and re-set the OCFs up on stands and into the umbrellas etc.

That's one thing of note with the 622. You don't set the remote flashes to slave mode. You leave them in normal E-TTL mode when mounted on the receivers. In fact, the 465 can't be set to work with Canon's wireless control but it will work remotely with the 622s.

The master 622, when manual control is set in the menu, flips the remote flashes to manual mode and sets the power levels you selected.

The most economical radio solution (for full manual and E-TTL control of both flashes) is the YN-622C transceiver. It provides control of both flashes from the 7D's flash control menu.

So, do I understand correctly that the YN-622C does not require a transmitter to be put on the camera flash mount and uses the built-in wireless function? I thought the Pixel King Rx would do that, but I'm not having any luck.

My camera with the batter grip and lens is heavy and bulky enough... I really don't want to add a transmitter if I don't have to.

Thanks!

No, with 622Cs, you'd need one in the camera's hot-shoe and, one each under every compatible off-cam Speedlite.

The built-in "wireless transmitter function" of your 7D refers to the "I'm-not-connected-with-wires-so-I-do-it-with-light-pulses. So-I-really-am-wireless." dedicated and highly specific Canon trigger function. To attempt to get anything other than a flash unit on the same system to understand those signals is the same as if you tried to answer calls to my cordless phone network with your cordless phone. They're both cordless but they are completely different in operation.

It's very much a matter of having a matching pair of units (irrespective of make) - one on the camera to shout "Fire NOW" and one under each flash to say "Gotcha". Mix 'n match don't work in much the same way as the on-camera unit shouting "Fire NOW" and the under flash unit saying "Pole sana, bwana. Sielewi nini wewe kusema. Unaweza kueleza, tafadhali"

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Thanks for the explanation - I was thinking that there was like wi-fi on laptops - originally you had to have a plug in adapter, but now they all come with the capability and the standards allow stuff from different manufacturers to talk. bummer.
