The hichlights of #2 are abit burnt out but apart of that both look absolutely awesome.

I think if you check the histogram you'll see there is little or no high clipping in the photo. Sometimes subjects in an image, like white ice, simply have no detail to bring out.

I used a 5D with a Canon 300mm f4 L IS and the 1.4X Canon extender, ISO 50, 1.6 second exposure at f40, the EXIF data is included with the file.

To be honest i didn`t even check anything,just what i saw on the screen.
300L eh? Interesting,need to try that sometime.
You`re probably right about white ice.
