Rokinon 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras

I want something with this kind of range with out actually breaking the bank. If I have to learn the lens to manipulate it that is not a problem either. Has anyone used this lens or type of lens before? What is your advice or experiences? Need help/advice

You'll probably have better luck asking this question in the Wildlife Talk forum, where you'll find many more long-lens shooters than you will here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=121

Actually I will be using the lens mostly for nature and landscapes is the reason I posted here. But will also use it for wildlife as well. I know there are different functions setting and features and I am trying to pick up some tips here and there before I go out in the next few week the weather should start breaking by me soon and the natural habitat will be packed.

What Phrasikleia is trying to tell you is that you won't get many responses here. Although a 500mm lens can be very handy for landscape use, the majority of landscape photographers don't use that focal length, let alone that lens.

You can certainly leave this thread here and perhaps someone will come along that can help answer your question, or you could greatly increase your odds of getting an answer by placing this thread in the Lens forum.

Hope this helps,
Bryan

Thanks got it... I am not sure of the lens for the specifics... What actual lens would be used for nature /landscape shots? Prior to this I did a few shots with the 75-300. Kind-of experimenting with fish eye and various lens settings.. I know it is almost kind of impossible to nail down specifics but what lens do you use?

The highest percentage of landscape shots are typically shot at a wide angle. On a full frame camera, for wide angel shots I use a 16-35 and a 24-105. By no stretch are all landscape shots taken this way, just a larger percentage.

Longer lenses definitely have their place, especially when you want to compress the perspective.

Yes, bps summed it up well. Wide-angle lenses tend to be more suitable for landscape work. It's a rare shot that would require 500mm, and you would need an incredibly clear day to shoot through that much atmosphere and not have a ridiculously hazy photograph. Such long lenses are better for wildlife photography, where you're not actually shooting all that far into the distance, you're just trying to fill the frame with something very small (like a bird).

My three most-used lenses for landscapes are the 17-40 f/4L, the 24-105mm f/4L IS, and the 70-200mm f/4L IS. If you're using an APS-C camera, then I would recommend the equivalent lenses 10-22mm for the wide end, etc.

I'm using the 5D (full-frame) and I would say 75% of my landscape shots where taken with my 70-200. Love my 17-40 as well. I occasionally use my 300mm for some of my landscape shots.

thanks for that information. I am still new and am trying to take in all this information at the same time to actually let it sink in so when I go out I can get some decent shots.

Lots of good advice, all of the above. I've taken some of my favorite shots with the EFS 18-55 on a 60D.

I am enjoying the camera and the few lenses that I currently have. I hear that some people out grown the use of their camera and or lenses but I am too inexperienced at the moment. I really like the canon and the images they are producing. I will keep studying this post for a long time and hopefully get on the right track.
