Baseball with a 600mm

Had our home opening series this weekend. I decided to skip the 400 and go all out with the 600mm f/4 the athletic dept. bought before last football season. I definitely need to shake some rust off, but I was pleased with the results. It wasn't as tight as I thought it was going to be. Not as fast focusing and not quite as tack sharp as the 400/2.8. I also put up a 2nd base remote, but didn't get anything worth posting. C&C appreciated as always.

My goal this baseball season is to get that one SI worthy shot.

Don't know why, but I love that you can see signatures on the bill of the pitcher's hat in #6. These all look great! High School baseball and softball tryouts are next week, so I'm getting pretty excited for the seasons to start. I still have at least one more basketball game to shoot first, though.

I'm definitely looking forward to softball. UT is going to be really good (should stay in top 10) this year, plus the two less innings, smaller field, and a mercy rule makes my job easier. Baseball is great and all, but it gets old quick.

Thanks. It's a great lens, but super pricey and pretty specialized (football and baseball mainly). I'd love to take it to the Smokies and try my hand at bird and wildlife photography though.

Since you are shooting at the Div 1 level, do they have a place for you to shoot from?

Yes, there are media boxes at the end of each dugout directly in line with 1st and 3rd base. We are also the only ones allowed behind home plate. There are some nice high vantage points in the stands too that I like to shoot from.

thanks! I just missed some plays I shouldn't have. And yes, all these were with the 600mm. I had a 70-200 with me, but barely even used it.

Great composition, great colours, well done!

Good set, with they could have pulled the series out....Much improved baseball team, I thought about breaking out my gear for Sunday afternoons game but decided not too.
