I guess many of you have heard about the new and highly accurate MFA-method "DotTune"? http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1187247 (external link)

Well, this awesome fix is about to get automated in an upcoming version of Magic Lantern. :D They have posted a Youtube-vid of how it works. The feature is still in alpha-stage right now, but it works very well!

I wonder if it will measure non-center AF points as well. When I use FoCal, I usually take AFMA readings from 5 AF points (center and the outermost cross points at the corners) and average them.

You get different readings between your AF points?

I've never thought about that. Is this an issue on all bodies? If so, can it be corrected by CPS?

Pretty much normal. You won't find a body that has same optimal AFMA value for all AF points for all lenses. If the values are within say 3 AFMA units or so, I wouldn't worry.

It will work with whatever is the active AF point, so you just need to set your AF point prior to starting DotTune.

Is there any hope that ML can implement Focus Adjustment for the 60D?

This singular step can transform a great camera into the leader in its class!

The most missed feature from the 50D...

Will this automatically tune mfa at both ends of a zoom's range? The 5DIII & 1DX can store mfa values for both.

Yeah I saw the video a couple of day's ago. I was going to try it manually, but now I just might wait for the automated version. What can I say; I'm lazy.

Focal does offer other features, such as sharpest aperture analysis and sensor dust analysis and it will also automate the testing/calibration across multiple AF points and highlight strengths and weaknesses across the focal point range.

But for simple AF calibration this does look like a very appealing solution, made all the better because you can run it anywhere you like without the need for a computer. I've taken ML for a quick spin in the past, but never found it a compelling solution to my needs. Once this is officially part of ML I shall install it on any supported camera I have and I will probably not use Focal again.

EDIT : It does appear that the latest Focal release candidate has added a similar calibration tool, although of course a computer and USB lead is required to run it.

FoCal will always give a more accurate result, because it uses all of the different MFA values it records to decide of the optimum. DotTune, OTOH, uses just two data points - the lowest MFA value where the confirmation light comes on and the highest value before it goes off.

IMAGE: http://www.frankhollis.com/temp/Focal%20vs%20Dottune.jpg

However, the difference is, in most cases, going to be minimal. And the sheer ease of use of DotTune when implemented by ML means I've got to try it out.

you must clearly work for Focal or have some involvement because you seem to defend them to the death on anything.
