Barrel race with the 5D3 & 70-200 f/2.8L II

One set of a run I shot at a NBHA show. This combo does a great job for me, the AF is super, the lens fast & being able to shoot the race without setting up strobes is a huge plus for me.

#2,#4 positioning are marketable back to contestants....1 is too early although its nice and low and tight going in , they like to see first barrell positioning......and #3 horse is in poor form, they wouldnt be interested......nice catch on #4.....good job

Are you looking at the same images I am? Did the OP add or change the photos? Or change their order?

Yes, 1 is slightly early. #2 is too far from the barrel and the horse does really not have a nice bend to the body around the barrel. But not bad. In #3 the horse has a really nice tip to his nose and nice bend to his body. In all of these the horse is not showing any resistance to the bit and #1 and #3 the horse is demonstrating he is going around the barrel in the correct lead. #4 has absolutely nothing going for it. It is way too late.

All these could use a little color correction.

To the OP, it's interesting to see these shot with the 5D MKIII. I've been thinking about it a lot but just haven't pulled the trigger! I use a 1DMkIV and MkII for equine sports shooting and a 5D for portrait type stuff. If the AF is as advertised on the 5D MkIII I could sure consolidate things. I could use it for about everything and use my IDMkIV for back up. Hmmmmm.

Love the MKIII, but wanting a 1D X, I'll get one before long if I keep shooting sports.

I would crop tighter.

Been many times I wish the Agri-Center had installed better lighting. #2 is my favorite

Still curious why, if you have a 5D3, you're wanting a 1D body. The criticism of the 5D series for sports has always been the autofocus. Now with the 5D that issue seems to be resolved.

And I hope I didn't seem just critical with my comments above. After I went back and read I could see how they could be interpreted that way. These are all very good captures. This lady should be pleased.
