Both Canon 70-300mm IS USM and Tamron 70-300mm VC are $350.

Tamron through adorama and rebate
Canon store refurb and 20% off

Which would you rather have? I know for a few hundred more the 70-200 L is a great piece of glass. But I'm talking purely on a 350 budget. Thoughts?

The Tamron 70-300mm vibration control lens is a very good performer which was used for these images.

However, the Tamron lens carries a long warranty for the original purchaser.

I'd have the Tamron.

Nice photos!

However, at the speeds you are shooting to make them nice and sharp, the VC has no bearing on the result. VC/IS is useful when you shoot at speeds lower than 1/FL (1/FLx1.6 for crops).

I used to own the Canon and never cared for the lens. It was soft at 300mm, and the AF performance was poor compared with a ring USM lens -- it especially hunted in lower light. While I have not tried the Tamron, based on the reviews I would choose it over the Canon based on my experience with the Canon.

I'd take the Tamron; they have very nice optics and their VC beats anything Canon has in their image stabilization, outside of the latest generation that started on the 70-200 MkII

Of the two, I would get the Tamron. However, since you are using a crop camera, the 55-250 is as good in the IQ department for less money.

I saw a guy testing both on dpreview and he posted a comparison picture of the T70-300 @ 300mm 5.6 and the 55-250 at 250mm crop out to 300mm equivalent and I couldn't tell a difference in sharpness.

Buy the 55-250 for now and save for one of the stabilized white 70-200(300) options

I had the Canon 70-300 IS USM. Too soft for me at 300mm and f/5.6. I sold it and went to a Sigma 70-200 OS for speed and 100-400L for range. Never shot the Tamron.

Thanks for the advice. It's for a friend who just wants a decent tele for a few hundred bucks.
I've got my eyes on the 70-200 L IS

Compare my Tamron against a couple of Canon 70-300mm IS. Tamron won on sharpness, contrast and overall feature set.

I considered both and thought the Tamron a slightly better lens for the money so that's what I bought. I have been quite happy with it.

I've used both and much preferr the Tamron. Tamron seems to have much better IQ all the way around.:)
