Just got my second and final 50 1.4 today. I had forgotten how much I loved this lens. Man...now THIS one's stuck on my 20D. I don't find it as sharp as my 24-70L, but that's mostly because I'm not up for stopping a lens I bought for it's wide ap down to f/2.8-4. However, I'm already having a blast. Probably took 100 shots in the past 30 minutes. Here's a couple of them:

Notice ONLY his eye is in sharp focus

Ronald old son, if your 24-70 f/2.8 is indeed sharper than your 50 1.4 prime at any aperture, then your copy of the latter one is singularly crappy. My advice.....dump it presto.

Nah, it's not that, it's just that the shots don't seem quite as crisp when it's wide open. I understand that's the case with this lens in general. No worries on my part.

I was thinking of picking up the 50-1.4, hope it is sharper. Maybe just a bad focus on the candle on that one.

It's your call, but one would do well to distinguish between the OOF blur outside of the DOF and lack of sharpness within the DOF.

My copy of the 50 f/1.4 is very sharp wide open within the DOF, however thin it may be , as it is expected of that lens...

well, it just doesn't matter to me now. I just sold it. You'll find the thread in the marketplace that explains.

Getting out of photography for now...

Henry is a Double Yellow Headed Amazon. He's about 18-20" long, I think.

I also have a plum-head parakeet, although it's about 3 times the size of what people think of when they think "parakeet".

As for smaller birds, I have a budgie, and a black masked lovebird (yes, just one)

greats shots- I love the candle one, even if it could be a tad sharper.

Are you saying you just sold the 50mm that you just got? this is confusing me.

Yep, I had it a whole 4 hours before having to sell it. Again, the thread in the marketplace has the whole explanation.

Well , Sorry to hear of that story... You were happy, mad, then sad, to much emotion for such a short period of time .... Nice pics none the less. I must be a noisey home with all those birds but nice to have some models in your home to practice on.
