I also would whole heartily recommend shooting manual, for both team and action shots. Your lighting really shouldn't be changing, so set it and forget it. Expose for faces. I'd take blown highlights on the ice vs underexposed/dark faces anyday.
For team shots, you should be good with your 24-105. It sounds like they aren't expecting much, so I wouldn't worry about off camera flash/strobes, unless you want to go all out. I'd be inclined to hop on the team bench and put them on the ice so you are shooting down on the group a little bit. For most hockey rinks, I'd probably start with 1/125 shutter, f4, ISO 1600 and adjust the ISO up or down from there depending on the rink lighting.
For action, 70-200mm all the way. Center-point, single point, ai-servo focus. f2.8, 1/500, and put the ISO where it needs to be. If the rink is exceptionally well lit, and you haven't hit ISO 3200 yet, I might be inclined to bump up the shutter speed to 1/640 or 1/800.
If you can shoot on the bench or another area that isn't obstructed with glass, do so. If you do shoot through glass, try to get the lens as close to the glass as possible and shoot straight through (opposed to at an angle) as much as you can. Hockey rink glass will kill sharpness and contrast, but a lot of it can be handled in post.
Hockey is a fast paced sport, so try to anticipate the action as much as you can. Make sure to get the easier shots (face-offs, celebrations, fights...) where players aren't moving as quickly. Don't expect miracles with your 5dii's autofocus system, but it still should be up to the job of capturing some great images.
Good luck!
