Very interesting read.
DSLR profile discussion. (external link)

It's on the ColorSync mailing-list.

Put on your thinking cap!

One reply is from Bruce Fraser, who says (in part):

If I were being less gentle, I'd say that someone perpetuating this misinformation is either remarkably ignorant, too lazy to do any actual objective testing, or has their own agenda that does not include education. In any case, it's irresponsible.

I'm glad that I read that in the second post. It saved me a lot of time since I have no desire to read an article that he calls misinformation.

Direct link to Bruce's post here (external link). I have Bruce's book, I just have to find time to read it. I read the first chapter, after that it gets to be kinda tough going.

I personaly like this quote form Bruce.

"As in many other things, size isn't what matters-it's how the two participants (in this case, source space and destination space) work together. sRGB is a particularly poor match to the gamuts of most printing devices."

This is the escence of color management. Getting all of these color spces in your workflow to work together, not against eachother.

I had to read the damn thing 3 times before I felt comfortable with my knowledge. And I still refer back to it on a regular basis.

When it comes to profiles, as with many other things, the more you know the more you don't know.

Anyway, all your posts seem to be rather solid on the CM thing.

Any brewers out there?
There was a brew guru who always said in his book(about 500 times) "Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew".
Follow this with color management and all will be good!

I only post what i'm comfortable doing - ie use sRgb for web work, or aRgb for print work or prints from a pro printer. I personally use ProFoto RGB when I had my last large prints done, they look great, but I know SFA about ProFoto.

I really must read that book, but I have a pile of photography books as large as my forearm before it in the pile.

One of these days (when I can afford it) I'm going to buy a new monitor and a calibration unit and Bruce's book. Then I'm going to go crazy for about 2 weeks....

Well, I'm pretty well off now, I'd like to think. Besides, I have a much easier task than you - "all" I have to do is get prints from a single printer to look like the image on my single monitor.

Actually, I wonder if I really *need* to read that book. But I know that I'll find it interesting.
