SX50 Birds - Near & Far/RAW & JPEG

What do you guys see as other uses, besides birding, for the SX50? I mean can this little guy replace regular DSLRs?

I would say give any other PnS to Kenn and Temple and they give you similar pictures. Nevertheless Canon should utilize this golden opportunity for a good advertisement. As is I am sold to SX50 (May be trading my 100-400 for one!).

I was planning to purchase a Tamron 70-300 VC USD to pair with my D800 for some occassional bird shots,,,,,, Kenn's pics just convinced me to get the SX50. It's light and the reach is awsome. Hoping to be able to try this tiny beast soon. Btw I was considering the Sony HX300 but then it doesn't shoot raw.

I see a lot of bad shots taken with this camera, quite a few of which are in the lens sample thread on this forum, but this camera really shines in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, like the two of you, Kenn and Temple. What an amazing set this is. IQ is wonderful. Simply excellent work. And great processing also.

Every time I see your pics, I want to buy this camera.

Two questions,

1, At 1200mm, what's the largest and smallest aperture?
2, Are these tripod mounted, I assume they are with a timer/remote to stop shake?

We haven't posted in the forums for quite awhile but I just noticed some recent replies to this thread and thought I should stop in...

Radders - The aperture range on the SX50 zoom lens is f3.4-f8. We shoot it at the long-end almost exclusively, where it is wide open at f6.5 and quite light thirsty, so slow shutters are the norm. Fortunately the IS is very effective... All of our shots are taken hand-held.
Here's a recent example from Temple taken at 1200mm f6.5 1/25, in less than ideal light:

Jeff, those last two shots are not Kenn & Temple's. Maybe the poster thought this was a dedicated thread for bird images made with a SX50?
