Why is there no distinction drawn? I was in negotiation to buy some gear and next thing I knew the person was banned.

Then the person is back.

Is it that difficult to place the word "Temporary" in the sentence?

It's bad enough to be banned. But if one is placed on the sidelines, or in the brokerage industry, in the garden, for 2 weeks as opposed to forever, is there a good reason that cannot be indicated so people know?

My guess would be that while the temporary ban is in place, the decision is still being made as to if it becomes permanent based on a number of criteria.

I could be wrong of course so don't quote me on it.

I'm thinking "Banned" is utterly binary in nature.

There is no "half participation" level so even if the ban isn't permanent, it's in full force while a determination is being made.

that is probably the best explanation I've yet to hear. However, it still doesn't make the case. Stating someone is temporarily banned does not impute partial participation. It merely tells people who may have been friendly with that person or engaged in a potential transaction, that more than likely they will be back.

Granted, if there is a reason that it turns into a permanent ban, then they just need change "temporary" to "permanent. Especially with the pardon fairy around now, some permanent bans have become nonpermanent.

It boils down to just something else the mods and Pekka would need to deal with and keep track of.

Isn't having to deal with you on a daily basis enough of a workload already MDJAK?;)

Nah, I'm a pleasure compared to most.

And don't you think they keep track now? If someone breaks the rules and is banned temporarily, for 10 days, let's say, as I understand is quite common, they then reinstate that person.

Would you like chocolate chips added as well? I can guarantee it's delicious.

Well Mark, now you know another reason why the Marketplace rules encourage you to find a means of communication between buyer and seller that's outside POTN.

As Jay guessed, vBulletin doesn't distinguish in titles between temporary and permanent bans. So only the TF could make the distinction Mark's looking for. This too shall change in Pekka's new forum software. But very few real members (as distinct from spammers) get permanent bans, and the spammers' posts also get deleted, so if someone has posts and is listed as banned it's a fairly safe bet that they'll (eventually) be back.

Well, I was poking around in the Moderator control Panel looking for a way to delineate the temporary from the permanent, and, gee, well, sorry Mark. I'll try to get you back when the smoke from the servers clears and the fire fighters say it is OK.

Meanwhile, I believe that Pekka will have a more definitive title for the suspended as opposed to the truly banned.

Speaking of the damned, er, banned. There is one class that gets summarily banned on sight but does not usually get their posts deleted, that would be the previously banned troll. Once a member is banned, even temporarily, he is not allowed to return under another identity, period.

Mark, you still there? I'm working on it buddy, The smoke should be cleared soon.

There are some intermediate steps that we can take, for instance if a member has particular problems following the rules in a certain area like the MarketPlace or G&N, we can make those sections unavailable to them.

Sometimes it's really important to not rush and make sure it gets done right before proceding forward any further. I am sure in this case Mark wouldn't have it any other way.

In VBulletin just make two banned groups with different titles. Add users to the appropriate banned group.

Damn, I thought they were never going to get that thing back in order! To err is human, to really screw things up you need a computer.

Glad to get you back, Mark. Thought we had lost you out in the interweb.
