I realize the arc reactor would have to be much larger to achieve the thrust needed. Maybe sometime in the future the technology will be possible.

suspect he's just taking the pith...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Well, anyway, that's a cool story about the chest "piece"!

Time to start modifying! My mysterious benefactor has provided me with an excellent bunch of hardware to fit all my lighting and power into.

Using my drill press as a vertical lathe, I used the tip of a spade borer to part the outer ring from the rest of the perspex disk. The inner I might use later but for now it's not needed.

IMAGE: http://i.imgur.com/fwokPWv.jpg

Similarly, the centre of the aluminium disk underneath is not needed, as I need to allow a clear path for lighting to the front from the source in the back. For this, I just used the bench drill to stitch-drill it all out, then hand-filed it clean. I left four tabs to screw it to the bottom of the reactor. The tabs still need tidying up a little to make them neat.

Here's a quick pre-assembly. I need to make some more bits before the lighting and power goes in.

I got one boot all spot-welded up today. Fits good and hinges well in the middle.

Just found this tonight. What an awesome read - the whole lot. Keep going man. I'd love to see those kids' faces when you finally get around in it.

Baz,
for a decent affordable metal cutting band saw, look at one of the portabands, and a stand like this rig.

http://www.swagoffroad.com …ortaband-Table-_p_64.html (external link)

these saws are designed to only cut metal, the blades are very affordable and are not likely to break anyway. Sorry to be a gear head, but Ryobi makes most of the worst tools ever sold, and I would never touch one. I know cost is a concern, so I am not recommending a full bleed Kalamazoo!
But these metal cutting portables may be your savior.
I'd go with Milwaukee for the saw.

All that said, the last time I looked it was all still card stock and the metal had not begun. Wow! Simply amazing.

Thanks mate. Those saws are good, but not suitable for my needs as the throat is waaaaay too narrow. Some of the single pieces of sheet metal are quite large and require lots of room for manoeuvring. My bandsaw has about 8 inches between the blade and the body of the saw and that's still too tight.

My very skilled uncle turned some brass rings to my specs. I got a little time to assemble them today.

Ahh, yes good point. This is how band saws are measured in fact.
