6D + kit vs 550D + better glass

It's nice to keep coming back to the forum discussions : )

My current set is this:
Canon 550D + 18-55mm kit + sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS + sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 + canon 55-250mm 4-5.6

and I have some cash to spend (~ 1200 $)

so I can go for the 6D + 24-105 + a slider or so -after selling my current set-
or I may upgrade my lenses + slider and more stuff

I shoot photos -portrait/studio/weddings + street photography- , and do videos for a while now...both important

Why I want a 6D ?
* Great Hi-ISO performance - photo+video -
* Full frame for better color rendition + better use of lenses
* More durable body

what holds me back?
* I can't get another lens or accessory for a while -still need small stuff-
* It took me a while to get that set of lenses

so should i go for it? share your thoughts

Don't know why you're even asking.
With FF you could always benefit from old good primes, which are not expensive at all but provides adequate IQ.

$100 50 1.4 MF prime on 5Dc.

$60 135 F2.8 on 5Dc.

I'd go better glass. What fun is a DSLR with 1 lens?

Those two were cheapest and easiest to get.
OM. Zuiko 50 1.4. and Tele-Lentar 135 f 2.8.

Standard screen was fine, I used AF confirmation chipped adapters.

6D without a doubt.

That's easy for you to say because you have a complete lens kit including some fast primes.

OP is going to be losing his ultrawide, telephotos, and dropping to an f4 standard (which gives back 90% of the DOF advantage vs f2.8 on APS-C)

FF is great, but not if you gimp your lens kit. And lets be honest, you going to really show up for a wedding with an old $100 adapted film lens?

portrait/studio/weddings + street photography

Non of those needs

ultrawide, telephotos

And showing up at weddings with 55-250 isn't any different compare to 50 1.4 and 135 2.8 MF lens.
It is hard to believe here and now , but in real world those lens were in use for weddings and such.
Actually, were are real photogs who are using modern Zeiss MF ZE glass on Canon FF DSLRs.

Sorry, I just don't subscribe to the FF at any cost mantra and I've used enough manual adapted lenses to know it's not a realistic substitute for most people. If you can't afford to outfit a FF kit well, then you will end up worse off.

I'd build a good lens kit with some lenses that can move to FF and then upgrade after you get a few jobs under the belt.

Are you going to be able to afford any backup gear if you go FF?

The iso increase the 6d will give you is not to be taken lightly, it is stupidly better.

I did the same thing the OP is thinking. I sold all my crop gear to fund my 6D kit. Fast primes came after the 6D.

Sold my 7D - Sigma 17-50 - Sigma 30 1.4 - Sigma 10-20

Couldnt resist the fast primes in the end, I do a lot of indoor shooting. The 6D with the 24-105 was well worth any trouble in my opinion.

you got right into it : )

I've some manual primes (35mm - 58mm - 85mm ) great IQ ,but the thing is they aren't practical in rapid motion/ I can't handle them fast enough
I'm not into the way the lenses look,It's about the IQ,I use both lenses in weddings BTW

and the cheap-o lenses some time focuses better than me in the dark + they have short focus throw if manual focus needed

(another point for the 6D...brighter VF)

I use UWA and tele lenses in weddings and in some concerts as well

If you prefer shooting in lower light/natural light, and find yourself constrained by ISO/Noise limits, then the 6D will be a tremendous boost to your talents. On the other hand, if you can keep your ISO to 400 for weddings (you didn't mention anything about flash equipment) then you'll love a great 70-200 2.8.

What are the pictures that you are struggling to capture ?

I have a T2i (love it) and Santa handed me a 6D (no idea I was that good this year). It's really nice having two. The T2i is a strong back up. The price of the 6D is going to drop a little bit, so there isn't a rush.
