I wasn't being totally serious....

I have two options in front of me.
Wait for a version i to come up for sale when I'm in a position to buy and get a 1D4 to use with it, OR, get a new version ii and get a 1D3. I used to use a 1D2N and I'm missing the machine gun!

To be honest I had a 1DIII and I would not want another, ever. My 1D4 is way better. Others may of course differ in opinion, my 1DIII was a focus nightmare.

Have you had a look at Fleabay? I know many are wary about dealing there but I have had nothing but good results with all my purchases (including 3 big white Canon's).
For reference I picked up a v nice Canon 300 F2.8 L IS Mk1 for 2101 quid in October 2012 and more recently had a VERY good deal on an 800mm. It is always worth a look but be patient and don't bid on anything you cannot pick up yourself and try it out.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I have used the Mk2 extender a lot on my 300 with very good results. True the autofocus slows and good light or a tripod helps. I just purchased the Mk3 2x but have not used it on the 300 yet because I just got the 500. IMO the 300 f/2.8 L IS MkI is a very good value and performs so well that i don't think the upgrade to the MKII is worth it.

That is my feeling. I use my 300mm with both extenders all the time.
