I'm just wondering if anyone has a car, van, 4x4 etc that they have adapted in some way as a Photography Vehicle? I'll give you an example, here in the UK I drive a Land Rover Discovery which has a flat platform on the roof that I built myself as a Camera Platform. It is great for getting those vital few feet of elevation at Air Bases and suchlike. Also, it is the Commercial variant, which means it is essentially a Van, with no rear seats and so plenty room for all my gear, but more importantly, I can sleep in the back..it's a bit cramped but it works..

Would love to see if anyone else has thought along similar lines, maybe a camper van or something...

Lets see some pics!

I have a Chevy Avalanche. I can stand on the back of it if I need to be higher, I can sleep in it quite comfortably (I have an inflatable mattress that fits perfectly), I can fit ALL my gear in it -Heck, I could probably fit 7 other people's gear in there with mine-, I can haul 4x8 sheets of plywood in it in the rain without it getting wet...And then during the week I can haul my family around in heated leather luxury. It's about the most versatile vehicle I've ever owned. Too bad it's the size of a small country.

All of our still photography vans had roof platforms, with a ladder in the back door. For the film/video production biz, things got more complicated: http://www.cameracarindustries.com/ (external link)

Surprisingly I like using my big Buick 4 door sedan. When I drive with my equipment...I buckle camera bags onto the very good thickly padded seats....these seats absorb road harshness, vibration very well. Also big Buick's are known for very good rides...they don't jar equipment.

They also have big trunks....so when I'm at the place where I'm shooting, I just move the equipment , camera bags into the voluminous trunk. A big, closed trunk works well to hide stuff. In a van, SUV, pickup....anyone with good eyesight can peer through the windows and see what you got.

lighting gear, my camera bag, lots of grip gear, makeup kit, jib/crane, etc. it goes everywhere too, on my last feature film, i had to off-road it on some muddy trails to get at our location.

next weekend we will be setting up my jib in the bed and shooting car-to-car

got the 4 door Tacoma with caper shell, plenty room in the back, can even sleep in there if necessary (bed is shorter than me). Can stand on the tail gate, not on the roof though. Works great, but it's a thirsty car. I'd not have it if I'd have to drive much during the week.

I've seen one fitted out for car camping, plywood platform inside with two long drawers underneath for camping gear, that would also work great for camera gear. And somewhat hide it. Guy built it all himself.

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things
