Today I drove to the New Jersey Canon Repair Center to pick up my first 7D body that had the new Locking Mode Dial installed and to drop off my second 7D to have the same dial installed. Do you know how many times I would carry my cameras over my shoulder, only to end up being in BULB Mode. No more BULB.
Thank you Canon Repair Center in NJ. Will be heading back up on Friday to pick up the second 7D.

I have been thinking about getting it for my 5D2. I have not bumped it often. But it seems to happen at the exact wrong times. Enough to make me want to swap it out for the locking one.

Go for it Mark. It's well worth it.

Funny how the dial was panned when it first showed up on the 60D.

I didn't like the idea when it first was offered, either, but have grown to really like it on my 5D3. One of these days I need to send my 7D in for the upgrade.

I had mine done about a year ago and consider it money well spent. My Mode dial would shift even if the camera brushed against my body and I don't have a pot belly, or it would shift when I pulled the camera out of the bag, lost allot of pictures that way.

I've never had any problem with any of my bodies switching modes without my permission, but I still appreciate the locking dial on my 6d. It just adds an extra step when switching modes thats kind of like the camera asking "Are you sure?"

Has happened to me a couple of times when the wrong mode was knocked on. Has to be a good thing if it can stop it happening.

I love it on my 60D. Keeps the mode at where I left it weather it's in my bag or when I'm carrying it.

I never had a problem with the mode dial on my 30d, or on my 40d but.... on the 7d i've knocked it into bulb a few times now!

Anybody know how much the upgrade is in the UK?

According to the email info I requested and received from Canon on this upgrade last week, the cost is $100. I believe my estimate ended up being about $121, including about $7 tax and $14 return shipping.

I live in Connecticut. I was instructed to send my 7D to the Irvine, California, service center. The OP lives near Philly, but he sends his to the New Jersey service center. Go figure.

Here's the original Service Advisory for the US:

When I got my 7D I couldn't see how this could possibly be a problem. I mean, How could you possibly bump the mode dial in such a way as to make it turn to a different setting? almost impossible. Well my 7D is at Irvine and should be back in a few days with the upgrade. Ha ha I figured out how to bump the thing. So I sure am glad this modification is available.

My exact experience. I had both a 30D and a 40D and never had a problem, but I sent my 7D in as soon as this was announced, because it happened far too often before the upgrade.
