Is that cat tied out on a leash?

Yep. Occasionally, I like to take the cats outside and get pictures, but Buffy's the one I can't trust. If she thinks she can, she'll shoot for the hills. My other two girls are easier; if they start getting out of hand, simply bringing out Jake (the dog) makes them behave. Worst case scenario, Molly (the black and white) tries to wander off anyway, and Jake will round her up and pretty much chase her back to the front door (Willow takes a while to warm up, merely munching away on grass, but after a half-hour to an hour, she starts getting the zoomies, where she takes one look at you and then flattens out and races off a few feet. Looks back at you, flattens herself and runs in the opposite direction. All she needs is to see Jake sitting beside me and she mellows out, won't even enjoy the grass anymore). But with Buffy, she's a quick girl, and she's long ago figured out that when it comes to speed, Jake can't match her (and trust me, he's tried). So Buffy goes on a leash, as a sort of backup. I don't like to encourage the outdoors too much, though (Buffy's our door-darter) so I tend to only bring Buffy out if she's spent a couple of months doing really well at not trying to sneak outside.

Some people are like slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

All this talk of Turkish cats, here's a scan of a pic of my late buddy Shiver. This was taken in my apartment in Izmir back in '91 not long after he moved in and took over. He was technically an Anatolian Shorthair (such a nice way of saying "Turkish street cat") and to say that he was sociable would be a horrible understatement. I couldn't board him anywhere without the people running the place saying they wanted to keep him. I had a friend who considered herself to be a "dog person" but within a couple months of meeting him she had two cats of her own.

My wife and I want to visit that part of the world again but she's afraid of whay i'll bring home this time around.

We really wanted to get another Van, but the one that we got came from a rescue and had severe problems from being in a house with over a hundred other cats. We were heartbroken, but had to get rid of it. My tuxedo kitty is my constant shadow now.

Bill, when we first adopted our Tspin we also got another cat from the same rescue effort. They were in a hoarder situation and the little girl (a muted calico) was older. she wouldn't let you get near her and she went to the bathroom ALL over the house!! We caged them both in our living room for 14 days, it got them used to seeing us and not being able to hide, I hand fed them so they liked hands (lol) and they had a small space to use the litter box. They were fine and I let them out and they still hid, but were better. then after about 10 days she started again going to the bathroom all over the house.

I called the rescue and they took her back, said they would have her work with a behaviorist and go as a single cat to a house where she could be an indoor/outdoor cat. It was sad to let her go, but within 36 hours our Tspin all of a sudden let us pet him and scratch him and sat in my lap!! I guess it was what needed to happen.

Found this little guy living under an old abandoned building.
he was sure wild. He has gotten a bit better but I guess you can't tame a wild cat.

How did she get the name Pickle? We have one that looks just like her but she's a small cat.

I believe that our rescue Turkish Van came from Cincinnati (or some place in Ohio). A friend in the DFW area who had a Turkish Van web site (and was the author of a book on cats) was the intermediary who actually picked up the cat at DFW airport and then got it to us. It seemed OK until we got it home and then it lit into our big tom cat, Squeaky (my avatar kitty), so fiercely that he would not even come out from under a bed without dragging him and was traumatized for months afterwards. I believe that he mistook the new cat for our very friendly T. Van, Scooter, who had died a few months earlier. Scooter was almost 17. It has been about eight years, but we still think about how much pleasure Scooter brought to our lives. The neighborhood kids also all liked Scooter.

The cattery in Cincinnati was raided after numerous complaints and they found that the interior of the house was covered in several inches of feces and had over a hundred cats along with many more running loose outdoors. The cat that we got, Teah, was supposed to be the "queen" for all of the vans. The friend agreed to take the cat back and try to find another home. At first, she thought that we were being too picky, but when it attacked her cats and almost killed one of her Vans, she knew what we were talking about and was almost ready to have it put down. Fortunately, they found a home in the Pacific Northwest area and fortunately Teah, the cat from hell, decided to clean up her act and start behaving. She was a beautiful van, but came from a horrible situation.

She is quite small really. We just thought the mixture of shades of brown looked the same as what we in UK call sweet pickle (not sure if you have it there).

Yes, we have sweet pickles here though I don't particularly care for them so that is why I didn't make the connection. ;)

Here is ours, her name is Spike. I just shot this a few minutes ago playing around with some high ISO settings.

Unfortunately I managed to cut off the tip of his left ear, but I don't think he noticed.
