It looks like he used an umbrella to light the cat. With enough (artificial) light you can up the diafragma (> f number). This will get you more sharpness over the whole photo, together with a good lens and some PS work, you will get yourself a razorsharp image ;)

The EXIF says it was an EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM at f/7.1.

Was actually my neighbour's cat , which shows up while i was about to mow the grass... yes does look like that.. he/she is quite like the by rose plant....
