this winter in SE-Asia, with only G1X with me. have got few keepers and all else is fine, besides combined effect of focus/shutter/(re)focus/next shot - lags (in any order), that in fast paced situation is simply hopeless with this camera. smaller than dSLR size and good high ISO are biggest bonuses.

any of you guys here? (photographing sunrise at Angkor Wat) :D

I take only my G12 when the hiking will be too hard to hump my 1 up the hills.
Shutter lag isn't an issue with landscape.
For the lightweight package it gives 10 high quality megs.

Before I went to Bali last year I sold my 60D + 15-85 plus other lenses and bought a G1X. As a travel P&S camera it is hard to beat.

However, in the same size range ... there is also the Olympus OM-D M5 ...

I`m satisfied with image quality, even though it`s not that good as from the T3i. I haven`t used any other lens on the T3i besides the nifty fifty, which has great IQ in my opinion, so I can`t compare the G1X with the kit lens, but some say it`s equal or even better. I also find that the focus is fast enough, of course when you compare it to the dslr is slow but I don`t remember missing any shots. ISO dial instead of EV compensation would have been better for M mode, but AV mode plus EV dial is ok. Preset scenes are nice, especially the vintage look and toy camera, which I used and I like the results.
The best thing is the size, when you compare it to carrying a dslr. I find it much easier and comfortable. The next best thing is the flip screen. People didn`t seem to notice I was shooting them when the lens was pointing towards them but I was facing a different direction and using the screen. Nice and stealth.
Overall, I think a dslr has the edge, if you don`t mind carrying it around. I do, so the G1X is better for travel and vacation, but when I pretend to be a photographer and just walk around the neighbourhood taking pics that nobody cares about :) the dslr is my friend. After buying the G1X I wanted to sell the T3i, now I think I`ll keep both, they each have their place.
As I said, I`ll post some more from Istanbul later.

Think of the type of photos you'll be taking on a trip. I believe the 'G' will do you just fine.

I undertook a two month cycle ride last year, using only a G12 as camera. The advantage was being able to carry the camera on me, rather than rummaging around the panniers whenever I wanted to take a photograph (for various reasons, I can not fit front panniers to my bicycle).

I was quite pleased with the results, which although not earth-shattering are fine for memories of the trip.

Some examples - all shot as JPEG and processed using an iPad while travelling:

By far the worst limitation with the G12 was the general speed, particularly for AF. The image quality is generally fine - even in low light if you are careful. I also found it more difficult to compose images than with a DSLR since mostly you can not use DOF for subject isolation - though maybe that is a good discipline :-) The folding LCD and macro are fantastic.

The camera was always reliable, despite getting soaked and dropped several times.

On our Flickr stream (external link) I would challenge anyone to tell which images were taken with a G12 vs a u4/3 or DSLR. While the latter are usually faster and more fun to shoot with, the image quality is perhaps not as big a differentiator as much of the web might lead you to believe.

I'm not sure i understand a two page discussion on this subject devoid of an explanation of what people do with the output of the cameras? Or are we all commercial photographers who supply print media?

Me? For over 30 years I carried slr equipment everywhere as a traveler, student, hobbiest and commercial photog. For the past 10 I've only carried a G and I'm thrilled with the option. I can't shoot everything I can with an slr but as I learn what I can shoot well I find more than enough subjects to keep me quite occupied. And I find that when traveling there are also plenty of times not fussing with taking pictures can be akin to shutting up and listening.

For my output? 3/4 (easily) gets sh$tcanned and of the rest 1/2 just sees the web and the other half is for large scale high quality printing for display but resolution and noise for the most part matter not at all.

Have fun
Paul
