My last holiday was a week in Marrakesh and as it was my honeymoon and not a photographic trip I took the G1-X while the 5Dmk2 and 7D stayed at home. While not as versatile as a DSLR and lenses it's a great camera for a city break where lots of walking mean a DSLR becomes a burden.

To answer Paul's post above, my favourites from the trip end up on flickr (external link), the best few on my website and several of the shots from my trip made it into my Getty collection

I just took a week long vacation to LA and Vegas, and brought only my new G1x. I was very happy with it, images are outstanding. On our little tour bus in LA I was actually getting a kick out of these two girls lugging crumpler backpacks with all their gear, thinking I am so happy with this little camera. Hey, as others have said, depending on what your trip is about, are you going to take a trip for the purpose of taking pictures, or are you traveling with family to spend time with them, and also take nice photos.

Just got back from Aruba. First trip since selling my 50D and getting a G12. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

the image quality is perhaps not as big a differentiator as much of the web might lead you to believe.

I agree with that. Many of the pics shown in the Show me your S95, G12, G15 pics etc. are amazing with a variety of styles being shown. I think the individuals photographic skills in addition to PP skills are bigger factor than the type of camera used.

I just got back from a vacation with both my G15 and 5D2... I used both cameras equally and shot mostly video. Based on the output, my next vacation will be shot solely on the 5D2.

Pictures seemed fine, but video seems much more smooth and less "digital" than the G15.

My requirements for a compact travel camera
1. fits in a coat pocket
2. goes to 24mm equiv
3. allow for low light/indoor shooting.
I think the best option right now far and away is the nex6 with the 16-50 pancake lens, and a prime (may be 50 1.8, or even a cheap adabted MF lens). The evf is amazing, autofocus fast. size very small, etc. I have the 5N with an evf added, that I have taken with the kit lens (18-55) but its not quite as wide, though I also have the 16 pancake, but thats extra weight. and I take the 50 1.8 along.
I also have a panasonic lx-5. at 10MP its good for outdoor shots.

I take only my G12 when I go backpacking. Used to lug around the DSLR with two lenses and it was a major pain in the butt (hips to be specific). G12 gives me about 2/3 the zoom range and most of the 40D image quality, plus video. IS is very useful as well.

A couple of years ago my wife and I spent a couple of days at a Chihuly glass sculpture exhibit at Cheekwood Gardens near Nashville. The entire site covers 55 acres and 30,000 square feet of indoor space, so seeing everything involves lots of walking. I carried my G11 in a Lowepro belt case, had my 270EX in my pocket, and a small, folding 5-way reflector/diffuser hanging from my belt. I was very pleased with the pictures that I got, and not even once did I envy the folks lugging heavy DSLRs, tripods, and lenses around the site! ;)

although artistically nice, quality is terrible actually, with shifted colors, blurry, sharpening artifacts, etc.

cut the photos to save space. Most of these look OOF to me and/or not sharp. I get much better clearer/sharper photos from my G12. Don't have any sized for the web or would post them. Look at some of the G series Speed Challenge photos.

Gs are DSLR in disguise.
Minus their low tolerance with low light that will show as excess noise, they are nothing shy of DSLR.
