Decide which lens is good?

I have T4i with 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 40mm f2.8 , 50 f1.8 & Speedlite 430ex ii.
So do I need to change the lens for 18-135mm or 28-135mm? I am a beginner in SLR but would like to have good lens. I have some one selling these lens so need to know if it is worth changing the lens or stick to my current lens.

Almost exactly the same question was just asked here in this post. At any rate, the answers might be similar, so you may want to look at that thread.

There have been two or three versions of the EF-S 18-135... The latest is "STM" with improved AF speed and performance. It's a nice range of focal lengths, pretty capable of nice images and a comfortable single lens/walk-around lens solution. But it duplicates focal lengths you already have in your 55-250. It's definitely a step up from the cheaper 18-55 kit lens. But it is "crop only" (EF-S), which might be fine since most folks will stick with crop cameras, not to mention that many who think they "need" full frame, really don't.

The 28-135 is an older lens, but still quite good and capable. It's a particularly good value on the used market at about $200 typically (sells new for close to $450). There are tons of them around, many have been sold as kit lenses on 40D and 50D. But it's not a typical kit lens in build or performance. I've used several over the years and have one now. It's a convenient walk-around lens, has fast/accurate USM AF, is usable on both crop and full frame cameras, is quite close focusing, has reasonably good and useful IS (similar to the 18-135), and is Canon "mid-grade/gold stripe/USM" build quality. Negatives, it's not wide at all on a crop camera, it tends to have "zoom creep" (there are DIY fixes for that), and it's a wee bit soft at the longest 135mm setting when used at it's larger apertures. Otherwise, it's image quality is pretty competitive with the far more expensive 24-105L. Of course, it also duplicates focal lengths you already have.

Would the 28-135 be useful to you? Only you can say. I use a 12-24/4 Tokina wide angle lenses to complement it on my crop sensor cameras... so it works out well for me because I already have wider angle covered. You don't, so if you like/want wide angle, this might not be a good choice for you.

The prices on those used lenses at least seem in line, assuming they are in good shape and work well.

Hi Thanks for the response. I have not tried the wide angle lens at all. Only assuming it is more wider than the regular lens. But In reality I don't know. Do you know where I can find the picture comparison between wide angle lens and regular lens?

I don't know how to identify how are the lens condition (18-135 / 28-135) ? I just saw in craiglist. Even I don't think I can fix the lens if there is an issue.

Plz excuse my foolish question.. what is actually crop sensor and full frame lens?

You have a T4i and you're a self-confessed beginner, therefore, any EF or EF-S lens will fit your camera - don't get too worried about the difference between full frame and crop just yet

Your current setup is very nice, and absolutely perfect for someone starting out. My advice would be to keep what you have and learn on it. All your lenses are capable of producing fine images. As you learn more about photography, you'll know where you want to spend your money. Why aren't your current lenses working for you? What are you looking for as you replace them? Faster lenses? Different range? USM? Better build? What kinds of photography do you enjoy most? When you have the answers to these questions, you'll have a better idea of where to spend your money.

As for the two lenses you're considering: honestly, I don't think they're much of a step up from what you have. Certainly they wouldn't make much difference to the quality of the images you're getting. Have a look at the sample image file for the 18-55 and 55-250 on this forum.

I started out with an 18-55 non-IS and a 55-250 and kept them for quite a while until I knew what I wanted, and why. They were great learning tools. As for the 55-250, I still own it and use it for vacations, hiking and other times when I dont want to carry a heavier, more expensive lens. It never lets me down and has produced some of my favourite images over the years.

those 2 lenses won't really enable you to do anything that you can't right now...

keep shooting with what you have, until you can't accomplish something you want...then start shopping for a lens that will allow you to achieve that
