I have the PCB HOBD and honestly I dont love it. I'm not really a beauty dish sort of guy to begin with. Most of my subjects dont benefit from such hard specular light. I'm thinking about painting it white to lower the specularity a bit. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is that the high output can help when you are combating the sun midday, but even then I'm not loving the characteristics of the light.

Has anyone else here done it? Were you happy? Would you do it again? Please dont get sidetracked about the build quality, it is what it is for the price that it was.....

Why not just get the diffusion sock? I'm pretty sure I had seen a post from PCB that indicated the HOBD w/sock had about the same output as the white BD. Just a thought, and that way it's not permanent. I would offer to loan you one to try it, but they're only $9.95 to begin with.

I wonder if a thin coat of white would sort of be like a compromise? Anyhow, just try it. You can easily remove the paint with a solvent available at Lowes. Worse case scenario is you'd be out a few bucks.

I have the sock. The sock just makes it into a round softbox, it loses any sense of beauty dish sort of light.

Likely not very efficient, but Mr. Richards and Mr. Jagger always advise to "Paint It, Black".

See:

Enjoy! Lon

get a white sheet and bungee it around the light to see if the sock would work better before you buy one.

Once again. I have the sock. But a sock just turns it into a fairly mediocre softbox, much different light than you would want from a beauty dish.

I have painted a few beauty dishes in my time. Matte white and glossy white (Mola-ish) take your pick. Oh and putting a sock on dish doesn't really turn it in to a "round soft box".

Please explain how it doesn't.

What's the difference in the socked dish and a soft box? Reflective interior through a diffussion cloth face'.

The same difference as my 5' octabank and my 4'x6' soft box.

You can go to The Lighting Academy where Rob just posted a blog about three white beauty dishes. He has lots of pictures of the light patterns. It's a rather boring blog that may put you to sleep if you are already familiar with beauty dishes, but if you are interested or are waiting for some Dulcolax to kick in, it may be worth reading. I like to keep an iPad in the John so I stumbled across the beauty dish blog.

beauty dishes work best with someone with good skin

why not just use a softbox? or a silver reflective

i don't see the need in a beauty dish if the type of light won't work with your subject

"Rather"? Be honest, it's Ambien on a page.
