What's the difference in the socked dish and a soft box? Reflective interior through a diffussion cloth face'.

Gonz.. A lot more output. plus a lot easier to carry around and less resistance with a wind gust to tipping. I use the white BD for my wedding workflow when outside. I spoke to Buff about this and here is what we got back.

The H/O BD has a 130 degree spread with a sock. The regular white has a 150 degree spread with a sock. With the socks, i can light large groups at F/16 @ 1/125.......may be totally different than what you want a dish for. But for us, the socked BD's help us light the big groups in midday sunlight....Speedlights wont cut it. With a soft box, we lost light output. Frequently had to shoot a 1600 at full power.. with BD's we are usually below 3/4 power level.

I've used it that way before as well. But thats not really my point. My point was that adding the sock changes the nature of the light to much more like that of a softbox than what you traditionally use a Beauty Dish for.

This is true. I Saw that Tim who frequets the wedding talk forum uses a single H/O and an AB800 with out a sock outside ( he was on a beach middle of the day) and was able to balance and not blow out a sky. So the H/O's let you get the output way up for groups in bright light (w/o a sock) and Bobby uses one outside for some of his models and dam near killed the ambient with ND.. the look was awesome. Might ask bobby what he was doing. I know a couple of guys that use them for specialty shots at F/22 in the middle of the day. See some of john Hartmans work.
