This question is basically about the 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 ORIGINAL lens and I'm a bit baffled.
I have been using the newer 28-80 ii, iv, v lenses for some time for listing ebay items which are always shot at around f8-9 with flash. The main thing I need is close focusing but the 28-80mm ii-v was fine. The lens sharpness was was fair as long as I didn't open the aperture too much but I thought I would kill birds with 1 stone and have a nice light walk around lens also and sell the 28-80's.
I recently bought the 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS Macro and not paying attention I assumed it would be a closer focusing lens but it is not (.5m). :(
Back to the drawing board... Its fun for a walk around but the little 28-80mm is amazingly closer (.38)

So I did some research for the last few hours and found there was a 28-80mm mk i in 2 variations which are supposedly amazingly sharp in comparison to the ii - v.
This link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_28-80mm_lens (external link)
According to the chart it says there were 2 original mk i versions which have some variations and one being USM and one not.

What I am wondering is can any confirm that the non usm lens has the same optics and does it really focus .38 like the newer versions. This is close enough but I would also like to have the optics of the original version reading how good they are.
I have searched like crazy on ebay and such and I can not find this mk i non USM version anywhere so I'm wondering if this is a mistake or something.
the optics are also a bit different, weight, f stop and some other things.

Not major but any info on the 28-70mm or 24-85mm comparison would be interesting also.

Any info would help ;)
Thanks

5D ii for shooting weddings also.
I kept searching and I wonder if the mk i non USM actually exists. I'm thinking its a misprint on wik.

also looks like there's quite a few on ebay...just look for the ones that don't have the silver ring above the zoom...and aren't USM

Thanks a ton DreDaze! Oh gosh you solved the puzzle. Ha ha ha! Not what I expected. It looks identical to the ii through v versions! I was looking for the design of the mk i USM but just with a different non usm motor and without the gold band.
I went back and looked at the wik chart and its right but the wrong order I think. I believe from what I have read that the USM was first and then followed by these one's you listed and all the ii-v's.

So it seems there are only 1 large different version. Thats where the confusion was, I thought there were 2 larger versions.

Well that is fine I think I will keep one of the later versions since its great of close focusing and optically fine at f9. I had a tall list but I should be happy with this little lens since its so cheap.

For others I also found that the 28-90mm also focuses at .38m as well which is nice and close but I hear not optically amazing also wide open.

Thanks a ton DreDaze for all your help! :)
