You can buy a nut that will screw onto the threads on top of the lightstand that give you a thin extension that will fit the crossbar. Its essentially what they use to connect two threaded rods for tightening spans. I'll try to grab a quick shot at lunch.

I use lightstands for my background support but, I use a pair of double superclamps to hold the crossbar. I picked up a pack of 8 retail display 035 superclamps on ebay and assembled four of them into doubles with 5x20mm socket head cap screws. I think I paid about $80 for the 8 clamps and the setup is really versatile. But...the clamps are not black.

Mar 01, 2013 22:13 | #6 Manfrotto's background support kit actually uses two of their light stands. I have it and it works fine for a muslin although its designed for paper rolls. I use some cheap Home Depot spring clamps to clamp the fabric to the stands. I have two more of the same stand for lights and they all click together for easy transport.
