Sorry if this has been asked before, but I wasn't able to find a definitive answer after searching through several threads. Can extension tubes be used with the Canon EF 100 f/2.8 USM Macro lens and, if so, which extension or set of extensions is recommended?

I'm currently having a blast playing with the 100 as is, but wouldn't mind some additional magnification to really get in close for little guys like this:

Yes, extension tubes can be used.

I recommend the set of three Kenko extension tubes. 12, 20 and 36 mm that can be used singly or in combination.

What would the difference be between the 1.4 converter and the Kenko tubes? Also, I thought the 1.4 and 2.0 coverters didn't work with this lens, but I could be mistaken.

Tihis will help clear up the confusion between extention tubes and teleconverters. For macro work, go with the tubes, for long-range sports or nature shots, go with the teleconverter.

Thanks for clearing that up. Does anyone out there use this combination (canon 100 and kenko extensions)? If so, please share your thoughts. If it's not that great of an upgrade, then I may just want to save my pennies (160,000 of them) and sell off my first born for a good telephoto lens.;)

The Canon 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters do not fit on the 100mm f/2.8 Macro. These teleconverters only work on a number of L-series tele lenses.

For macro, you want extension tubes, not a teleconverter.

Get the set, you will not regret it if you want more magnification. Also you can use a 1.4xTc + tubes + telephoto lines (e.g. 70-200) to get some significant magnification; and gain some working distance at the same time. My point is the 1.4xTc could also be used for macro work if done appropriately.
