I have a Canon 7D and a 430EX Speedlight. I'm thinking of getting a remote but I see wireless shutter releases and wireless flash triggers. I just want to attach my Speedlight to the camera's hotshoe and release the shutter remotely, with the flash firing when necessary. I saw a combo flash trigger/shutter release but the transmitter connected to the hotshoe, so no way to use an attached flash. I'm sure I'm making this more complicated than it really is. Can you point me in the right direction for something on the economical side?

I think your confusion is that some popular models of flash triggers also do double duty as remote releases. Its a handy feature but its important to keep in mind that its a separate function that you dont need to worry about. In those combo units the receiver does not need to be mounted in the hotshoe, its just a convenient place if you arent using a flash. The receiver still need a cord to connect to the side of the camera to serve as a trigger so you could just as easily velcro the receiver to your tripod to get it out of the shoe. The RF602 is a pretty good bargain and they have decent range.

Use Yonguno YN-622C wireless flash triggers and the Satechi WTR-A wireless shutter. YN-622 #1 goes in the camera's hot shoe; set the off camera flash in the hot shoe of YN-622 #2. The Satechi remote shutter has a cold shoe that you can sit in the hot shoe of the YN-622 #1. The shutter release cable goes from the WTR-A to the camera.

There are two types of triggers

  1. generic wireless flash triggers, which trigger any flash at a manual power setting,
  2. and then there are ETTL-compatible wireless flash triggers which transmit ETTL commands and messages between camera and flash.

Those shutter release recievers you see placed in the hotshoe, is just placed there. I you have to use the hotshoe for a flash, just let the reciever hang after its wire.
