hey guys. i have been thinking about upgrading from the 1ds mk III to the 5d mk III and hope any of you who have owned both cameras could give me your thoughts.

is the upgrade big enough to justify selling my 1ds mk III and adding cash to get the 5d III?

the 5d mk III interests me mainly because it produces cleaner files at high ISOs while the 1ds is only so-so at iso 1600. also i'm ready for a smaller body.

please let me know what you think or if there are any good comparisons of the two bodies please post a link.

thanks :D.

If you are ready for the smaller body, I would go for it. I only used the 1Ds3 for a couple of months but I can tell you that the 5DmkIII is the best canon body I have ever used. The files are gorgeous but what really blew me away is the AF system and how good this camera at everything

I only have experience with the 1D3 (not Ds) vs the 5D3, but I totally agree with blonde on the AF performance and look of the files. I have no problem saying its the best camera I've ever used at just about everything I can think of. The only thing I miss about the 1D3 are a few little customization options and the ability to have multiple setups saved to access quickly.

i've owned the 1d mk III too. you really can't compare it to the 1ds -- they are two different animals that just look the same! the 1d mk III wowed me like to other camera. it was just fast and sharp and had fantastic colors and is excellent in low light. i sold it because i found 10mp to be too limiting....and i also had the 1ds.

the 5d mark III does sound like a winner.

The 5D3 is a great camera Ed. I prefer it over the 1D4 for all uses except sports, although I've decided to use 5D3 as my sports body anyway. High ISO is great, AF options are schweet, video is handy, and compact body are all selling points. You surely will miss the build of the 1Ds though.

Why don't you rent the 5D3 for a week to see if it really is a better option for you.

This matches my experience.

The 5D3 is great and even good for sports but I wind up using the 1D4 more for sports. Otherwise it is the 5D3 for everything else and I could use it for the sports too.

Only thing the 5D3 is not good at is softball/baseball since it does not like to shoot through fences nearly so well as the 1D4.

I cannot comment on the comparison with the 1Ds3 for you because I have never so much as touched a 1Ds3.

i know the 5d mk III is a better picture making machine in low light but i guess i have to figure out how important that is to me. the 1ds has been my main squeeze since the end of 2008. i need to torture myself for awhile and think about it.

the gal at canon says they just got in 300 refurbs and i can get $300 off for turning in an old film camera. i almost jumped on it right there but decided i better do my research first.

i held a 5d III at the local camera store and it's an impressive camera that fits my hands well.
