I was browsing through the Canon bodies on B&H and was looking at the 60Da. The listing says it's infrared sensitve. Does that mean you can do regular digital IR photography with a red filter out of the box?

I thought i read somewhere where people who shoot this type of photography said canon left out some important features and that getting the camera modded by yourself saved money and produced better results. So overall they werent very excited about the "a" 6D; canon 85mm 1.8, Tamron 24-70mm VC, Canon 135L Canon 70-200L is ii

Mar 01, 2013 17:44 | #5 I am aware that the 60Da is designed for astronomy. I do have a bit of interest in that but my main interest is in IR photography so a camera that can do both and could be usable for normal photography in a pinch is appealing to me. I am mainly interested in if this camera is a better option (price not withstanding) to getting a used 30D or 40D and sending it out to get modified for IR.

There is a specific style of filter often used in astronomy that is designed around a very narrow range of the IR spectrum because that is the emission range of a lot of stuff we're normally looking for. If you try to use such a filter for 'general' IR photography then you will likely be fairly displeased with the results.
