Hello gents, I have a question my 1D classic. I bought it from adorama so I was missing a lot of original packaging like the OEM battery charger, software cables and manuals and I only had one really bad battery with it. So lately, when I've been charging my Lenmar NPE3 batteries with it, I'll have them fully charged and then stick them into the camera. I would fire one shot, and the shutter seemed to get stuck or something and I would get an error message.

As soon as this all happened, the battery seemed to drain by half or would almost completely drain and I'd have to charge it again. And oddly enough, the battery would fully charge itself in like 8 minutes (not the usual 2 hours needed) and things would be good again and I'd be able to shoot continuously for hours.

This has been happening the last couple of times, and every time it would happen would be a month apart (I shoot a monthly show with this camera).

What's going on here? Is my shutter dying or are my batteries just screwing up? I'm inclined to think its something with the camera since it happens even with the original Canon battery.

Any help would be appreciated!

that sounds really weird- does the original canon battery drain also?

Yep, I'll stick it in and browse the menu or try to shoot a photo and the error will happen.

Does the camera get warm? Sounds like the camera for some reason is drawing so much current that the battery voltage drops. The camera then assumes the battery is empty. The charger, on the other hand, correctly notices that the battery isn't empty and can be quite quickly recharged again.

Sounds like the battery is not fully charged or has an internal problem.

Try a new or known good battery. It soundslike what you have is on its last legs. You mihht start with Adorama if you just bought this. It should have come with a decent battery!

Not sure how the 1D charges (battrry in or out of camera) but since this seems to affect multiple batteries maybe the charger?

Hmm, I wish I had the oem charger to test this out. I only have the charger Adorama gave me with the camera

Mike

this^^

It is virtually impossible for the camera to physically drain a charged battery in 1 shot. The battery is bad and not accepting the charge, or the charger is bad and just not fully charging it. My bet would be on the battery. The fact that it is only charging for 8 minutes pretty much shows you where the problem is.

I guess there could be a contact problem. Are the battery contacts in the camera clean and free of corrosion?

Looks like good advice to me above.

I was just thinking...To half drain 1D batt in 30 seconds or so would make so much heat you could not hold the body it would be that hot.

(about 1000 watts of power) I reckon the most you'd get out of a 1D batt under high load for 30 seconds is 80 watts.

Nerdy stuff but useful if you are fault finding.

Cold temperature.

Battery performance is substantially reduced during low temperatures. The battery probably isn't able to deliver the required amount of current when it's cold. You're able to shoot continuously for hours afterwards because the batteries have warmed up.

Yes, but note that the camera says battery is drained to half capacity. While the charger manages to reload it from that state in 8 minutes. While the charger needs 2 hours to charge an empty battery.

So the camera is obviously not draining a lot from the battery. But something happens that makes the camera believe that it has drained a lot from the battery.

If the camera did something that did result in a high current for a short time, it wouldn't be enough to make the camera really warm. But could be enough that it's possible to notice that a specific spot on the camera warms up.

There is a quite high load when shutter and mirror are operated. But normally very short current pulses. But if the camera for some reason bugs out it could potentially draw a significant amount of current there before the camera decides that way too much time have passed without the processor having seen a end-of-movement sensor trigged. And that could be enough for the camera to have time to make a battery voltage reading that made the camera think the battery level is low - because the battery isn't intended for such a high current for a longer time, so the cell voltages sags a bit.
