Just got my refurbished 70-200mm F4 IS and I am loving it so far. I know I didn't buy it for the IS quality, but in a quite room, it is pretty noisy. It makes an initial click noise when I half press the shutter and then it sounds like gears spinning inside. I've had IS system in the kit lenses and Sigmas and they aren't this loud. I guess I was expecting more from an L lens. Is this lens supposed to have loud IS? or did I get a defective one. Seeing as this is a refurb and has been thoroughly tested, I guess this might be normal?

There's nothing better than a noisy IS!! At least you know it's working :)

Haha, I understand, but that initial click clack screech sound that starts up the IS motor is what gets me. The actual IS running isn't that loud. I just thought it might be a problem because my kit 18-55mm and 55-250mm are pretty silent on the IS startup. My Sigma 17-70's OS is pretty much completely silent so I don't know why an L quality lens is so noisy on the IS front. But since everyone says it's normal, I'll believe it.

LOL, I know exactly what you're talking about. When I first got the 70-200 f4L IS I too was worried about the IS noise. It is a lot noisier then the other lenses you listed.

If you do a search you'll find that this question pops up like once every other month. Nothing to worry about, just wear some ear plugs so you don't go deaf ;)

If you look at how it works, it is understandable, that it makes noise:
