I have a 2 part question. First I'll start by telling you what equipment I'll be using.

I'll be shooting with a 10D & 550 flash on a custom bracket.

If I need to use a monolight to shoot in a dark ballroom, how do I determine the power setting on the monolight?

Secondly, if I want to use the 550 and a pocket wizard setup do they make a cable that would sync the 550 & the pocket wizard?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to POTN :)

1) You have two options:
a) Use a light/flash meter (eg Sekonic L-358 is what I use).
b) Set the camera on M, 1/125th, ISO100, F8, and adjust the aperture until the histogram shows the exposure is correct.

2) I think you need a hotshoe foot that can take a sync cord. If you post in the lighting forum someone will be able to help you out.

I suggested to a mod that the thread be moved, just so you got more replies :)

One thing i've found - when using a strobe with a large group, always put the strobe directly above the camera lens, and high up. If you don't you'll get some peoples faces in shadow. Putting it high up helps reduce ugly shadows behind them, and trust me on this, you REALLY don't want to have to fix that in photoshop - it takes AGES.
