What was the pros and cons of upgrading to the 1Dx? I'm thinking about selling my 5D3 and upgrading to a 1Dx, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Well was it worth it?

I never owned a 5D MKIII but I tried one in a store and for my shooting style,I preffer the 1DX over it.In fact,I'd rather have one 1DX than two 5D MKIIIs.Although,I have to admit that one thing which the 5D MKIII has that the 1DX doesn't have that I really like is it's silent mode shooting.

Worth every single penny for me =)

I came from 5D mark II's then to a 1Ds 3 to 5D mark III with grip (see my fb page) and it still never felt right.
But since upgrading to the 1DX, feels like ive got my 1Ds3 back with a whole heap more technology to it =).

There is plenty more in the 1DX menu/function/settings to play around with than the 5D3.
If you can afford it, get one, but 5D3 is good enough......until you get the 1DX

Why downgrade? 23.4Mpixel to 19.3Mpixel (joke)

Depends at what you shoot and how

That's just crazy talk

OP, IMO, it's not twice the camera.

Even if they were sold at the same price, I would choose the 5D3 in my case. I carry around two bodies so the extra size is a liability. The ISO performance is good enough and I don't need the extra frame rate and the better build quality.

It never is, ever heard of diminishing returns? Some people can pay twice as much for ~10% more performance across many types of items in many industries. Is the 5D3 worth six times more than a T4i? It's all up to you... Some people can justify buying the $21,000 Leica S, with lenses that start at $5,000 a pop, even though it's AF and speed performance lacks compared to even a mid-range DSLR.

Yep, in reality, the output from both cameras will result in roughly identical prints. The 5D3 can maybe put out an extra two inches compared to a 20" print from the 1Dx.

This is all a case of personal need. Me? I couldn't live without a grip on my body, so why have a creaky plastic POS held down by only a screw, when I can have a solid chunk of metal? I would definitely want to go for a 1Dx.

The 1Dx is for people who shoot subjects where every frame can result in a different photo, and it's the best at that. People seem to forget that this is a full-frame camera shooting at 12 frames per second, for the first time in over a decade since cameras have gone digital, the last cameras to shoot 35mm this fast were the 1DV and earlier pellicle mirror cameras. They went through a roll of 36 exposures so fast, it actually took them longer to rewind the film than shoot it.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Once you've gone 1 series nothing else will do. I went from 1d2 -7d (yeuch) - 1d3 - 5d3 - 1dx as my primary body and although the 5d3 was a leap forward the build quality and fps of the X made the purchase irresistible. The 5d3 is a great body and I will get one as a backup, the 1dx is greater than the sum of its parts.

Logically there isn't much technical reasons to upgrade but the 1 series are ergonomically streets ahead over a gripped body.

One big con is obviously the price. The 1dx being twice the price of a 5diii, one has to decide do I need the 12fps and do I need the build/weather sealing. If you dont need these it may be a waste of money upgrading, if you still want them but don't really need them its a luxury upgrade (but one has to be good to ones dself on occasion)

I didn't realize you'd purchased the 1D X. When did you get yours? Did you still keep the 5D3?
