A bit embarrassed here. I generally avoid small, furry critters that scurry around the ground so I need some help. I know Mr. Egret but what is that hanging from his beak? It doesn't appear to be a mouse since I see no ears. Moles don't really look like that. So?

Taken at the Ridgefield NWR in SW Washington state.

Maybe a Vole? Or lemming, they like boggy areas.

Lots of nutria in the area but this one was a bit far from the water.

Mouse. Nice catch!

My first thought but could not match it up to any mouse in the Audubon Guide. It's too fat and round and seems to lack prominent ears.

Getting close I think Flo. Vole is looking good in the Audubon Guide too.

I think you've hit it although the Audubon Guide doesn't list the specific water vole. The vole does look to be the answer. Egret crack huh? That fits and there seems to be a near unlimited supply of the stuff for them this year.:D

Thank you all for your help.
