I am trying to decide whether to sell my Canon 7D and buy a Canon 6D. Full frame is a big part of the reason, as I like to take landscape shots with wide angle. Any thoughts on why I should or shouldn't, and what I would gain and lose, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should keep both. Perfect to have one backup camera.
I have both. 6D gives me a lot more keepers than 7D.

I just switched from a 7d to a 5d classic and couldn't be happier. Going to a 6d would be even better. I'd sell the 7d. Unless you're photography is your business, no need for a backup. A lot of people recommend keeping a backup, but it seems like I hear a lot of people saying those backups just sit unused. I'd sell the 7d now before the 7d mark II comes out and drives down prices of your 7d. If you really need a backup, buy a 40d for under $300.

Here's my thread explaining my first impressions after switching. I use mine for landscapes and candid shots of my family.

Thanks for taking the time to write. You are absolutely right, I don't need a backup camera. I'll decide soon before the 7d resale price goes any lower.

You lose the AF capabilities and wireless flash control that the 7D has, but will gain better high ISO performance and wireless connectivity/gps, all for around a price delta of about $800 (when comparing used market prices). Only you can decide whether that is worth it to you for what you shoot.

You'll have to ditch your CF cards for SD, you'll lose the 8fps, the superior AF, magnesium alloy build, weather sealing, the joystick, on camera flash commander, just to name a few. Also, if you are using any EF-S lenses, they won't be compatible with the 6D. I'm not trying to dissuade you, just listing some of the cons.

...magnesium alloy build...

Yeah, that polycarbonite top to allow the GPS / wifi to function is a major blemish alright.

You lose the cheaper reach of the crop factor.

It is all worth it tho! I went from a 7D to a 6D without any regret. I am VERY happy with the 6D. I lost the better AF of the 7D but honestly, I spent the majority of the time using the 7D in the AF expansion "+" mode or single point af. I do miss the joystick but with much less options.. scrolling through AF points is not an issue with the 6D. I spent a year with a T3i which has very similar AF point selection.

8fp was nice but seriously overkill for my purposes. 4.5fps is plenty for me. I really like the silent shutter of the 6D.

I miss the 7D's dual functionality of the top buttons by the LCD. But thats very minor.

6D's high ISO is extremely impressive along with overall IQ. Not 6400 high but 12800 is useful! I was very happy to find the 6D slightly smaller and lighter than the 7D. I really enjoy the weight and feel.

The biggest pain is dumping all of your EF-S lenses for EF.

It's just my preference. I like the feel and heft of things that are built to last.

So, in your view, the polycarbonite top means the 6D won't last?

The biggest factor is you are losing a number. 7 is bigger than 6. this is the reason why I drink pepsi one over coke zero, it must be better with a larger number. Unless I'm golfing then I switch.

I would think if you are doing a lot of landscape shots that wifi could be very handy, so you can compose and focus remotely and not be laying down in a uncomfortable position. Do you shoot where using higher ISO would be a big gain? Or would the loss of the fps/autofocus would make an impact.
Have you held a 6D yet? I'm not talking about build quality, just does it feel ok in your hands comfort wise? I have large hands so the 7d with a grip feels fine, smaller cameras just don't. Sometimes it's the little things that are not truly camera technology that can make a big difference.

I prefer metal over plastic. Okay?

Wide angle should not be a reason to switch because there are honestly more high quality wide zooms for APS-C.

The reason to switch would be if you crave the most background blur and subject isolation for portraits or you shoot a ton of stuff at ISO 6400+.

His point is that all but the top cover of the 6D is made from the same magnesium as the 7D...the 6D is solid as a rock, your argument rings hollow.

Do it OP, it seriously is a huge difference. And to whoever said not to do it for wide angle, you're nuts. For crop you're forced to use wide zooms, there is no crop equivalent to a 14mm prime, 24mm prime, etc. The options on the wide end for FF are much greater, even my 35/2 wouldn't have been a real option on my crop camera and I'm already finding that I LOVE this focal length.
