EF 70-200 F/4 L vs. EF 24-70mm f/2.8L

Okay, so tax return time is about to come up... I am just debating on which lens I want to get and am looking for some people who have either, or both of these lenses to give me some "inside" knowledge and opinions.

Which would be better for taking photographs of sunsets, mountains, distant scenery etc.

And, which would be better (even if it isnt one of these lenses) for taking pictures of people... you know, the family get togethers and whatnot.

Based on what you plan to use this lens for I would say the 24-70. The 70-200 would not be wide enough for most of those shots you plan on taking.

I would second the recommendation for something in the range of 24-70. Personally, I would grap either the Sigma or Tamron for this range at 1/3 the price of the Canon unless you really need the L glass.

Interesting turn of phrase 'really need the L glass'. Must remember that one for the accountant and therapist

24-70 for all the situations you've outlined, or something even wider for the family events wouldn't hurt. Maybe the 17-40 for that if you want to get 2 lenses. If only one, a 24-70.
