If I have a 200 F2.8 and double stack 2x teleconverters....

The first TC would read 400mm with f5.6 giving me AF...If I double stack another 2x, do I still get AF but will be at 800mm?

I am sure quality suffers but you do have AF at 800.... thoughts? jim

Mainly ANALOG..... but I still have a few digitals hanging around

Actually, from what I have seen, the 200 does not even work well with one 2X... I cannot imagine 2. Granted, I've only used one, and not for very long, but it was sent back because it was rubbish for birds with the 2X III. So far, that 400 5.6 in your sig is the best I've seen on a 2X. at least, vs. the 100-400L and 200L.

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

no AF.

It'll try to focus as the second 2x won't be recognised...the combination will still report 400/5.6.

I like my 400 and wouldn't give it away for nothing....but I do need some sort of 200 and with f2.8 for low light under canopies etc... So I was thinking either the Canon 200L or the Sigma 70-200f2.8. But as long as I was at it, I would get some TC's...one never knows where that might take either of those two lens. It might appear if I put on the 1.4 first, to either of those two lens I would end up with 280 at F4.

If I understand TC's..the first one reads while the second one is not read by the camera...so if I add the 2x I would then have 560 with a F4 camera reading and still Af (not too sure how fast) , although actual exposure would be different. ? jim

I have a 200 2.8II prime and Canon 2xTC v3 and they work fantastic together.

Hmm... 800mm f/11... does it _really_ autofocus accurately? In truth, I'm surprised the phase discriminators can see any difference at all.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

Really? All I know is that it was not good at all with birds.

Now that I can't speak on. The only time I really shoot birds is on our annual family vacation at Myrtle Beach. And I just recently picked up the TC. This is from a local rugby game.

I tried this after seeing this post to see if you would still get an aperture of f/4 with stacked TCs, since I thought the best I could get was f/5.6. My setup (7D, Canon 200 f/2.8, Sigma 1.4X and 2X TCs) allows only f/5.6 with the f/1.4 mounted to the camera.

In case anyone wants to see a test shot, the first image was taken with the setup above and the second with a 100-400 at 400mm from the same location. A tripod was used, but no PP other than resizing. It does maintain AF with stacked TCs.

interesting....a good experiment..it appears that the setup is a bit softer....closer but softer. So you had the 1.4 plus one 2x and with the 1.4 nearest to the camera it read the 1.4 only. That is what I thought. I thought it would be a F4 with the 1.4 but jumped to 5.6? jim

That's correct. When I use only the 1.4X, it will go to f/4, but stacking them would only allow f/5.6.

With stacked TC's, it'll be the one attached to the lens that is recognised, not the one attached to the body. The extra 3 contacts on the front end of the TC are used to determine if a TC is present and which one it is.
