There are a lot of radio triggers on the market ranging from $20 Cowboy Studio triggers to Pocket Wizard's very pricey E-TTL transceivers. For some reason, the PW Plus lineup of transceivers offer enough features at a barely-decent price to be found in a majority of photographer's bags.

With the announcement of the new Pocket Wizard PlusX, do you think it's a better buy than the Plus III?

I have written an article comparing the PlusX and Plus III (external link), you can read that here – http://blog.soskiphoto.com …sx-vs-plus-iii-flash.html (external link). I want to know your thoughts on the two transceivers though.

Are the features of the PlusX too little, is the Plus III in a lost market, or are the cheaper alternatives good enough?

as lame as it sounds, the battery level indicator is such a plus for me.

Personally, quad zone triggering alone makes the Plus III worth the extra $50, especially in a studio environment.

They both offer batter level indication. The X uses green, amber, red LED, whereas the III used the LCD.

I really like the zone controls of the Plus III. At $50 extra it doesn't seem like much until you start adding them up. A 4 light setup would run an extra $250.

I guess it's all relative. I got myself 5 MultiMax units instead of the Plus II units because I wanted the zone control features. (This was long before the arrival of the Plus III.) ;) :D

I primarily use zone control:

- to separately trigger individual strobes/flashes for metering (i.e. setting lighting ratios)
- to sequentially cycle through multiple flashes to allow shooting at faster frame rates
