Hi.

Nice light and expression. Thanks for providing the info about the light setup.

If I can ask an ignorance-displaying question or two:

What does the grid on the 3x4 softbox below do in this case? Would the image have looked much different if the box had been ungridded?

Can you say anything about your choice to use an actual light rather than a reflector below the model?

Thanks!

Owen.

Grids help light what you’re lighting without a lot of stray light going elsewhere. I used to not use them - but now, I love the extra control it gains. Even on a softbox.

It really depends on your set, design & use. If I had only one light then I would have feathered a non-gridded softbox to light the subject and background.

Yes, I could have used a reflector. But no one was there to help hold it, I did not want it fixed close to her around her waist as I was shooting 2/3 through headshots without changing the lights or exposure. A reflector below her would have got in the way, altering the lighting of the shot.

A strip box on the floor could have worked too. I only had two striplights so the 3x4 was next.

my daughter's band needed some 40s images for a show they were doing so i shot a couple of bandmates in vintage clothing, trying for a 40s vibe with them looking away from the camera.

33" shoot through up and right of camera with a 600ex-rt. probably about 1/4th power
48" shoot through level and left of camera with a 600ex-rt. probably about 1/8th power

ISO 100 1/200 at f3.5

my daughter's band portrait. during a football game after pre-game/before half-time shows.

pretty much reverse the lighting from above. 33" up and left of camera at 1/4th, 48" level and right of camera at 1/8th.

ISO 200 1/200 at f3.5

ive never really been a portraitist and while i shot some officer portraits in the Air Force, i didnt really mess around with the lighting too much. other photographers were usually setting things up and i just held the camera and mashed the button...

OOPS! just realized this says "... strobes.." not speedlites. my only defense is that when i started shooting (1976-ish) speedlites were known to me as strobes...

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

Excellent! How much ambient light did you have to deal with?

quite a bit, it was a bright gym with all the lights on... I tried to get close to a black frame and then add light where I needed it
