Nice light and expression. Thanks for providing the info about the light setup. If I can ask an ignorance-displaying question or two: What does the grid on the 3x4 softbox below do in this case? Would the image have looked much different if the box had been ungridded? Can you say anything about your choice to use an actual light rather than a reflector below the model? Thanks! Owen. Grids help light what you’re lighting without a lot of stray light going elsewhere. I used to not use them - but now, I love the extra control it gains. Even on a softbox. ISO 200 1/200 at f3.5 ive never really been a portraitist and while i shot some officer portraits in the Air Force, i didnt really mess around with the lighting too much. other photographers were usually setting things up and i just held the camera and mashed the button... OOPS! just realized this says "... strobes.." not speedlites. my only defense is that when i started shooting (1976-ish) speedlites were known to me as strobes... -im just trying. sometimes i succeed

How much ambient light did you have to deal with?

quite a bit, it was a bright gym with all the lights on... I tried to get close to a black frame and then add light where I needed it Bryan
