If I can ask an ignorance-displaying question or two:

What does the grid on the 3x4 softbox below do in this case? Would the image have looked much different if the box had been ungridded?

Can you say anything about your choice to use an actual light rather than a reflector below the model?

Grids help light what you’re lighting without a lot of stray light going elsewhere. I used to not use them - but now, I love the extra control it gains. Even on a softbox.

It really depends on your set, design & use. If I had only one light then I would have feathered a non-gridded softbox to light the subject and background.

Yes, I could have used a reflector. But no one was there to help hold it, I did not want it fixed close to her around her waist as I was shooting 2/3 through headshots without changing the lights or exposure. A reflector below her would have got in the way, altering the lighting of the shot.

A strip box on the floor could have worked too. I only had two striplights so the 3x4 was next.

Excellent! How much ambient light did you have to deal with?

quite a bit, it was a bright gym with all the lights on... I tried to get close to a black frame and then add light where I needed it

really nice lighting and even better results!
