I was asked by one of my friends to shoot some models in prom dresses for her store and this one definitely stood out the most to me!

This was a 4 light setup with all Alien Bees:
-1 Octagon softbox as key light
-2 gridded strip boxes on the sides
-1 for the background

^ did you PP her chest? it looks a little in the clarity of the junction between her skin being supoer soft and the sharpness of the dress.

Thanks Terry. I followed THIS (external link) DIY guide and used an 18" Plastic Planter (external link) from Amazon US. My BD looks exactly like the finished one in the DIY except that I put This DIY speedlight bracket (external link)

I am now in the process of making a 22" BD using a similar plastic bowl from Amazon but this time with a 8" Aluminum plate as light deflector. I prefer plastic as these tend to be super light weight and I can use them outdoors on location without the need for heavy weight lifting.

Saw this guide and it looks really good. Just need to find the right shaped bowl which is my biggest problem here in the UK!

Some shots from Dragon Con 2013.

1.
Main: YN-560 in reflective brolly box, to left of camera
Edge, YN560, bare, behind subjects
Fill, 430EXII with a blue-green gel and shoot-through umbrella, to camera-right of subjects.

I really wanted to use a slower shutter speed to get the lights on the costumes, but I wanted to minimize the ambient. Tradeoffs, ah well.

2.
Main: YN560 in brolly box, directly camera-left of model
Kicker: YN560, bare with green gel, directly behind model to light the smoke

3. Dragging the shutter.
Two bare YN-560s, on stands in front and behind the model. I wanted an umbrella but it was too windy.
The third light (back camera right) is a streetlight.
1/5 second shutter speed, rear sync. We tried a veriety of shutter speeds and 1/5 was about the sweet spot for a swinging Light Saber.

So, as you can see, trying to get the annual Christmas card photo with my 3 boys can be a challenge. Since I shoot them against a green screen for this, I can have some fun with the backgrounds later to better fit the photos! These were shot in my home studio...Mola Setti camera left as main, 60" Photoflex octa camera right for fill, and a Chimera strip light for hair/accent lighting.
