So Rokinon just announced that their 24mm tilt shift lens is now available for preorder. Cost on amazon (link below) is $999.99 which puts it over a grand less then the canon equivalent.

Rokinon lenses are known to have good optics (except for some distortion and flare issues with certain lenses) so what is everyone's thoughts? Obviously most will wait for reviews to start popping up but still curious what people think. With this be a good alternative? Is this a waste of Rokinons time? Any one excited to give it a try?

As you say, Samyang/Rokinon are known to have good optics, so as long as the mechanical side of things is up to par, I don't see why it would be a waste of time at all.

Ah, i'm Really looking forward how this lens will perform :).. And I've always found their mechanical built to be more than satisfying. I just wish they would install AF-confirm chip by default, kinda pain in the @ss to do it yourself...

The only real competition for the Rokinon will be the Canon 24mm TS-E version 1. You can get it cheaper than the Rokinon and it's a Canon....... The only thing many people will do is wait for the reviews. I'd bet a lot of people are going to want to know how these two will compare. If the Rokinon is anywhere even close to the Canon 24mm mk2 TS-E, then they have a winner.

Last month I had a short go at a prototype version, seemed ok. Unfortunately I can't compare it to anything else as it was the first time ever I've had a TS mounted >.>

Not quite. Price-wise yes, Samyang and Canon I may be comparable. But the Samyang and the II both have the same optical formula (16 elements in 11 groups) and both have independent tilt and shift functions. The version I has fixed tilt and shift, meaning some careful handholding with rotating and/or a screwdriver. The samyang also has some lens coating for CA and other lens "magic".

Im just waiting for a review of a nikon version and a d800. if its good enough for them, it will be good enough for me!

Canon mk1 was not a great lens optically. At the time it did allow fancy shifting and tilting when there were little sensible alternatives, but it doesn't have an impressive resolution at any f-stop

I own a Samyang 14mm and it is an excellent performer - stunning lens for the money! I also am fortunate enough to own the 24mm TSE II from Canon. Now whilst I agree that the Samyang/Rokinon are excellent lenses for the money, I do worry about the amount of plastic used in their construction. A great number of (I understand) vital components are either made from plastic or screwed into plastic. I am sure this is the complete opposite of Canon L lenses? To this end I would happily shell out a few hundred pounds for the 14mm Samyang but here in the UK the Samyang 24mm TS looks like it will carry a price tag of £999.00 (pounds sterling NOT dollars!!)? I would prefer to save and pay the extra for the Canon version :D

Gear? Don't want my wife seeing how much kit I've got ;)

I'm planning to pick this lens up in F mount since I already have 24 TS-E II. I would wait for reviews before the OP buys.

8mm, 35mm and 85mm are not better. Don´t know about the T/S 24mm, but I have no reason to think it is better.

There is also quite a bit of selotape holding things together, but at least it is easy to fix

Tape is very common in newer lenses. These thin plastic tubings of lenses could be best bonded with a tape. Old manual lenses had brass and aluminium tubes with threads, but this is heavy and expensive.
But still is some aluminium and threads in the Samyang 14 lens. I have my lens disassembled pretty much - probably I could improve its border quality enough to use it again. The big front lens and a second "group" is in plastic housing. It was very interessting to see this.

I needed to "repair" two worn out screw plastic holes with glue, hope I could reopen this to "repair" the sticky iris.

Samples look pretty decent, except maybe for the far corners on the panorama shots.
Still, for half the price of the Canon, definitely worth a look if the build quality is good.

From the samples, they don't look any significantly better than the 24 TSE MK1, which is pretty good when stopping down to f5.6 and beyond.

Of course with the Samyang, you're missing the E in the TS :)
