Today thousands of officers from across the state and throughout the country came to honor two fallen officers of the Santa Cruz Police Department. Detective Sergeant "Butch" Baker (28 year veteran) and Detective Elizabeth Butler (10 year veteran) were shot and killed last week while conducting an investigation on a violent sexual predator. These officers were the first to die in the line of duty in the 137 year history of the SCPD department.

This morning a motorcade/ procession was led from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk to the HP Pavillion, in San Jose, where the memorial was held. The public support was awe-inspiring, with every highway overpass and city street from Santa Cruz to downtown San Jose lined with citizens.

I had met both Butch and Elizabeth several times, but regret to say I did not know them well. I saw them moments after they were murdered, as I was among the first responding units to arrive. The suspect was killed after he fired on perimeter officers shortly after my arrival. Because of our close exposure to the incident, the memorial service was especially touching, and a fine tribute to a brave man and woman. I thought I'd share some of the photos taken by myself and my friends during the day.

As a side note, please don't get the wrong idea because of the smiles you'll see in some of the photos. Everyone involved was torn up emotionally, but you can't help but smile at the brotherhood and sisterhood of having such a tight law enforcement family. We also overcome grief by trying to see the happiness in life.

On to the pictures;

Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office (the finest department in the nation...yes, I'm biased) going up Hwy 17:

A CHP motor sergeant on northbound Hwy 87:

CHP motors pass the procession on Hwy 17...NOTE...this photo and many of the others you are seeing was taken by my "beat partner", Casandra, and her first time ever using a manual camera or DSLR:

And the photographer of the last photo, Casandra, hamming it up for the camera:

San Jose Fire on the side of Hwy 87:

Highway 85. I always worry in processions that people going about their daily lives will be upset at being inconvenienced due to the traffic delays they cause. If that is the case, you sure wouldn't know it. The amount of wave, smiles, thumbs-up, etc., you get from people on the road is humbling. It is a great reminder how appreciative people are of public safety...something we often forget:

Joe took this photo of me. You can always count on a CSI detective to take good photos. As part of their job, they really learn their way around a DSLR:

My other motorcycle riding buddy, Neall, and his co-worker, Mary. Neall and Mary are CA State Park Rangers:

A rare shot of some detectives in uniform:

An outstanding Sergeant, Paul. He used to be in charge of Internal Affairs. Fortunately I rarely found myself in his office. :

Nearing the HP Pavillion, in San Jose:

I just wouldn't be myself if I didn't get at least one snapshot of a photographer:

Thanks for the tribute. As a hospital chaplain I've been involved in too many of these situations over the years. I know how incredible the bond is and appreciate the support you offer each other.
Blessings!

Thank you very much for all the kind words. All the highway and freeway shots were taken by Casandra, and I'll pass the compliments along to her.

Here is a link to the "Final Call" for Butch and Elizabeth. It's tough to listen to:
