A PM I got a few minutes ago

"You'll probably get more response on the forum if you leave the extra "e" out of the word lens. The plural forum is lenses, but the singular form is NOT "lense". Check your owner's manuals or the boxes your equipment came in and you'll see that I'm right."

My reply
So you really think I would get more replies by doing that, I though this was a photography forum not a get your GED forum. If nobody wants to reply to my post because I can't spell, then so be it. Hope it made your day by sending me this PM.
God help the people from another country that has trouble with the english language and post something here.

His reply
There are lots of folks here who gag at the mispelling of lens and react to it. I'm just trying to help you avoid what some folks get for replies in the forums by using the wrong spelling.

End quotes
So, do I need to get my GED before posting anything else on this forum?

I think correct spelling definitely helps; it is all in how you present yourself. However, I guess I assumed that 'lense' was the European/older spelling of 'lens', like 'Theater' and 'Theatre'.

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

Occasionally the Spelling and Grammar Police get a little excited here. I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it. Spelling lens as lense does punch a lot of people's buttons, so if you are looking for replies, using the proper spelling helps keep the crowd calm.

I generally avoid threads with gross errors because experience here has shown that they generally devolve into arguments over spelling and completely ignore the original question.

I just cut out the middle step.

I think a PM like that is something you just shrug off. But then, it is good to know what the proper spelling for certain words should be so maybe take the PM with good intentions.

I myself is not the most grammatically correct person in the universe (see what I did there?), so I don't mind it when people post things with minor spelling mistakes or errors. However, if it's REALLY bad to the point where I don't understand what the person is trying to say, then I try to get clarification. However, I usually don't ignore someone due to their post having spelling errors and what not.

As for lens or lense or lenses, I think the proper wording is "lens" for 1 single lens and "lenses" for a bunch of lenses...not that it really matters

I can see his point now, it would be like me going on a religion forum and spelling God, Godd. Believe me I know now the difference between the two, now.

Is this a Joke?
Or many of members here need to check in order to seek help with their OCD or simply their ego! That is if bad economy has not affected their insurance policy!

Unfortunately, it's not. Some members seem to be sadly confused and think that they're at Lexicography-on-the.net, not Photography-on-the.net. That's their loss. Most of us don't care how well you spell, or type, just how much you care about learning to take the best photos you are capable of.

If someone gives you a hard time over your spelling, report it to us and we'll make them start posting in Finnish (Pekka, who owns POTN, is Finnish). :{)#
