Having learned about cell phones I tried a quick, low whistle out the window. It got his attention and he looked right at me.

No,no, the day before I missed a shot of a GBH in flight because my cell phone went off. Spooked the bird.

Nice shot, rather scruffy looking, isn't he? I saw your post the other day about the cell phone mishap. I thought you probably had an app on your phone to sound like the coyote! Funny how we interpret things differently.

As a matter of fact, I do have an app like that on my phone and have used it several times. Audubon app. We have the Pacific NW version on our iPhones. The best $10 I've spent. It allows you to play the sounds of many of the animals/birds which has helped us ID as well as subtly get the attention of critters. http://www.audubonguides.com/index.html (external link)

Must be nice...I have one of those really old phones that are for making phone calls. Primitive yes, but I'd rather put my money into my hobby! (Including sales tax, I spend $107 dollars a year for my cell phone service!)

I understand. I just broke down and upgraded to a smart phone for the wife and me. The kids have been encouraging us to do it for a while now and now that we have we really like them. The Audubon app was the first one we loaded and we end up using it all the time in the field. But even with a family plan they aren't cheap.
