Yes, Live-view is bright enough to spoil it. A red headlamp is ideal but with a wide lens, it's easy to have red light stray into your picture. Use live-view for setup and initial shots and then turn off anything that uses the LCD once you've started.
Lesson from last night - Don't forget to plug the dewstrap in. D'oh !
The eyepatch thing is true. I have one eye that is dominant so I find it hard to do. Some people use them at total eclipses to get the best view in totality. Useless factoid - Using the eyepatch to keep one eye dark adapted is the origin of the stereotype pirate having an eyepatch.

Thanks again. Cool bit of trivia about the eye patch. And I though I was getting enough police attention just shooting around the city at dusk. Now I will have a balaclava (it has been around freezing and very humid while I have been shooting), a mask on the back of my head (a feeble attempt at preventing a cougar attack while hiking alone at night), and an eye patch.

This should help

Very helpfull, thank you. I framed my picture under the assumption that the star at the end of the handle of the big dipper was the north star.

The eye patch holds true to sailors as well, it's some thing that is still used to this day as it allows you too have one eye ready to see at night time. We use this when looking through periscopes on submarines.
