Thanks. Just when I think I'm getting the hang of it, the season ends. The last high school regular season game is Friday. UMHB finished Saturday. I shot several of their games. I like the daylight! I'll shoot high school varsity until about 8PM now. Then I'm losing my light. I'm not messing with the high ISO night shots and that really speeds up post processing work - fewer images and less work.

I find though that I don't get as many tack sharp images as I think I should. I need to look at the EXIF and see if it is on the 70-200 + 1.4TC, or the 300 2.8. I believe it is the former and it also is slower to focus with the 1.4. I'm not happy about that, but I'm working at it.

There are some good shots in this thread. Lots of good shooters out there.

agree with daylight
makes all the difference
I shoot to much at night
dim lights and recycle drives me nuts

noise is my enemy
and my 40D's enemy is its shooter

I am surprised you haven't picked up a Mk III yet. I saw you looking. It would be a world of difference over a 40D.

it seems for me a 7D would be a little better choice
my biggest problem is noise

from what everyone has told me a 7D will handle noise better

I got 600 cash from shooting and starting track meets
I can probably buy one now

but afraid canon will come out with a 7DII or a 70D
and the 7D price will drop to 300

I dont have much left to shoot
maybe some baseball softball playoffs

and a coupla of track meets

will prob get one before next fb season
but then canon will prob get the next 7D out
and Ill over pay for a 7D

Ill prob be in McGregor thursday night for a reg qual meet
hollar if your headed that way

I would love your imput

Nice sharp images. Some are night shots which for most small schools would be almost lighted by candles but you have some good detail in there. The white balance isn't consistent. But I will say I'm a sucker for the pitcher shots.

great stuff
still cant decide between a 7D and 1DIII

Go with the 1DIII. The 7D doesn't do well with high ISO. I didn't like the 7d for that reason.

Pat, don't think you have to worry about that happening :)

prices drop, but like a car, it is in the first few years. Once it is a generation or two behind the times it is already selling for a pretty stable price. For instance, I sold my 5D classic 3 years ago for $750 and now, despite 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III both being released and on the market for some years, I was able to buy a 5D classic for my nephew about a month ago for $500.

You have to pay $300 for a point and shoot, what makes you think a 7D will go for $300 any time soon????? Attached to this message is the graph of used 7D prices over the last year on amazon.com:

But to confuse the issue further, you are at the end of the busy season, and will have to wait until late summer to start back up. so just wait and see what prices do. I do think you need to consider getting the best High ISO performer out there for the money in your price range. Your problem isn't skill or knowledge or lens or even camera, it is the crappy lighting you have to put up with. So address that issue with a better High ISO performer.

you can do that in any number of ways. used high performance cameras are a great choice but I want you to consider the T4i. Canon just released the T5i so the price is dropping to a new stable plateau. It's processor is based on the 7D but it is UPDATED to handle ISO levels up to 25,800 which is DOUBLE the 7D's ability. And the price is around $640 right now for a NEW camera! So exactly in your budget.

It's fps is 5 fps so definitely fast enough to shoot sports.

Consider your 40D. For $640 you could have a NEW T4i (and sell the 40D for $250 -350 so real price would be $300-400) and compared to your 40D you would:
1)have 4x the ISO performance
2) a brand new Digic 5 processor compared to the Digic 4 processsor in the 7D and the Digic 2 or 3 in the 40D
3) 5 fps compared to 2-3 fps of your 40D

and
4) you would have made the decision and then could move on with your life and put all that worrying aside :)

You should be getting a lot of playoff games in Waco and Lorena. Was it Josh Quinn from the Telegram? I've shot UMHB sports with him many times and he is talented.

These shots are great if done with your 70-200. Nice and tight, crisp, great color.
